INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 16. OAKLAND's men's and women's swimming and diving squads continued their dominance at the Mid-Continent Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium as the Golden Grizzlies captured 11 of the 15 events Friday, setting two records.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, Oakland continued to set the pace on the standings board as it finished day two with 691.0 points. Centenary moved into second place with 404.5 points, while Eastern Illinois tallied 297.5. Western Illinois checked in at fourth place with 249.0 points, while South Dakota State fell in behind the Leathernecks with 225.0 points. Rounding out the standings were IUPUI (194.0) and Valparaiso (129.0).<\/p>\n
Oakland continued to lead the pack in the women's race with 617.0 points, while Western Illinois (348.0) and Eastern Illinois (313.0) sit in second and third place, respectively. Centenary checks in at fourth position (263.0), with South Dakota State just behind with 251.0 points. Valparaiso (215.0) and IUPUI (183.0) complete the standings after day two.<\/p>\n
Oakland started off the day with six straight victories, beginning with the women's (1:47.94) and men's (1:29.26) 200 medley relay teams. The men's team set a new Championships record, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:30.90 set last year by Oakland.<\/p>\n
In the 400 individual medley, Amanda Burwell took first with a time of 4:32.75, while Eddy Toro touched the wall first on the men's side in 4:03.93. Toro shaved more than seven seconds off his previous Mid-Con-best time this season.<\/p>\n
In the 100 butterfly, Kristen Hamilton picked up the individual title on the women's side in a Mid-Con season-best time of 58.29, while Chris Tansel notched the win on the men's side with a time of 49.58.<\/p>\n
Eastern Illinois' Marlise Davidson picked up the first victory over Oakland on the day, capturing the 200 free in 1:53.58, the fastest time in the Mid-Con this season. Oakland's Dawid Tatarczyk took the men's 200 free with a time of 1:40.22.<\/p>\n
In the 100 breaststroke, Madeha Farrar of Western Illinois took top honors in 1:04.59, nearly two seconds faster than the previous best time in the Mid-Con this season. On the men's side, the Golden Grizzlies' Zoltan Horvath won with an NCAA "B" standard time of 55.14.<\/p>\n
Oakland's Sarah Ludema bested the competition in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.32. For the men, Marcin Unold set a new meet record of 47.96, surpassing the previous mark of 49.61 set by Oakland's Hassan Haitham in 2000. Unold's time is also an NCAA "B" standard mark.<\/p>\n
IUPUI's Elizabeth Scott won the women's 3-meter diving competition with a score of 241.80. The day concluded with the Oakland women winning the 800 free relay in 7:44.86 and the Eastern Illinois men taking the men's race in 6:54.34.<\/p>\n
In all on the day, the men posted six top times and the women three.<\/p>\n
