Women’s 200 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

A day after a double victory and nearly a triple medal, Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> put herself in position for another U.S. Open record in the women’s 200-meter IM.<\/p>\n

Hosszu clocked a time of 2:09.78, which is just about a second off her U.S. Open mark of 2:08.66 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series this year that also stands as the top time in the world this year.<\/p>\n

California’s Caitlin Leverenz<\/strong> qualified well back in second with a 2:14.30, while Trojan’s Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> put up a third-seeded time of 2:14.65.<\/p>\n

Leverenz is ranked seventh in the world with\u00a0a 2:11.40 from the Orlando stop, and could be the only person who can challenge Hosszu tonight.<\/p>\n

Madisyn Cox<\/strong> (2:15.25), PASA’s Karlee Bispo<\/strong> (2:16.20), California’s Celina Li<\/strong> (2:16.64), Argentina’s Virginia Bardach<\/strong> (2:16.79), Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> (2:16.94) and West Vancouver’s Emily Overholt<\/strong> (2:17.04) also made their way into the championship heat.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 IM<\/strong>
\nChase Kalisz<\/strong> and Michael Phelps<\/strong> will go for sub-2:00 swims in tonight’s 200 IM final. Both swam in the final prelim heat, where Phelps commanded the lead after backstroke. Kalisz took a slim lead after breaststroke and held on to take the top seed with a 2:00.75. Phelps qualified second with a 2:00.77. The two will have to go under 1:58.73 to get into the global top 10 rankings. Ryan Lochte’s<\/strong> 1:57.20 stands as the fastest American time in the world, ranked third globally.<\/p>\n
Thiago Pereira<\/strong> was tapped to also be a contender in the final, but was disqualified. Rouding out the top nine will be: Josh Prenot<\/strong> (2:03.34), 400 IM winner Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> (2:03.43), Max Williamson<\/strong> (2:03.45), Mohamed Hussein<\/strong> (2:04.10), Alex Lebed<\/strong> (2:04.85), Dylan Bosch<\/strong> (2:04.97) and Michael Meyer<\/strong> (2:05.04). Watch for Prenot to challenge his 13th-ranked season best of 1:58.98 tonight as well.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 back<\/strong>
\nKatinka Hosszu<\/strong> will wrap up her weekend in Santa Clara in lane five of the 200 backstroke final. She posted a 2:09.83 this morning, and will target her lifetime best of 2:06.81 from last month. There’s also the Hungarian record of 2:06.61 by the legendary Krisztina Egerszegi<\/strong> on the line, and Missy Franklin’s U.S. Open record of 2:05.68 might also get a push.<\/p>\n
Franklin will also be in the final as the third seed after posting a comfortable 2:12.14 in the heats. Maya DiRado<\/strong> qualified second with a 2:11.19, not far off her own lifetime best. Central America will also be represented in the final, with Mexico’s Fernanda Gonzalez Ramirez<\/strong> (2:12.74) and Guatamala’s Gisela Morales<\/strong> (2:13.15) qualifying fourth and fifth, respectively.<\/p>\n
Also into the nine-woman championship final will be: Erin Voss<\/strong> (2:14.12), Elizabeth Pelton<\/strong> (2:14.30), Meryn McCann<\/strong> (2:14.31) and Iryna Glavnyk<\/strong> (2:14.53).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 back<\/strong>
\nTonight’s final of the men’s 200 back will feature some of the best names in backstroke in the United States. Tyler Clary<\/strong>, the reigning Pan Pacific and Olympic champion, put up the only swim under two minutes with a 1:59.97 to take the top seed for the championship final. Clary will be looking to beat his season best of 1:58.43 from the Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte. A faster time would get him into the global top 15.<\/p>\n
Ryan Murphy<\/strong>, already ranked ninth in the world with a 1:56.91 from the Austin leg of the Arena pro Swim Series, posted a 2:00.58 to sit second. Colombian Omar Pinzon<\/strong> swam a 2:00.75 for third, while Connor Green<\/strong> took fourth spot with a 2:01.40.<\/p>\n
Matt Grevers<\/strong>, known more for his 100 backstroke prowess, qualified fifth with a 2:01.52. Jacob Pebley<\/strong> (2:01.89), Michael Taylor<\/strong> (2:02.26) and Tristan Sanders<\/strong> (2:02.49) took sixth through eighth. Michael Phelps<\/strong> might be happy that there are nine lanes at the George Haines International Aquatic Center, as he qualified ninth with a 2:03.01. The swim marked his first long course 200 back since March 2012, where he swam a 2:01.79.<\/p>\n

Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>of Trojan Swim Club finished prelims with an impressive 30.44 in the women’s 50 breast. Already ranked second in the world in the 50 breast, Efimova’s time of 30.44 leads the pack going into finals tonight. Jessica Hardy\u00a0<\/strong>will be joining her after swimming a 31.12, and Laura Lindsay<\/strong> will round out the top three with a 31.56.<\/p>\n
Alia Atkinson<\/strong>, currently ranked third in the world after a swift 30.54 from Charlotte, will be seeded fourth going into finals with a 31.65.\u00a0Danielle Herrmann<\/strong> (31.72) and\u00a0Sarah Haase<\/strong> (31.81) will join as the fifth and sixth seeds in the finals.<\/p>\n
Laura Sogar\u00a0<\/strong>(32.38),\u00a0Julia Sebastian<\/strong> (32.41), and\u00a0Emma Schoettmer\u00a0<\/strong>(32.54) will round out the top nine.<\/p>\n
