THE women&#39;s swimming &#038; diving team is in first place with 315 points after the first day of competition at the NYSWCAA Championships, hosted by Le Moyne at Nottingham High School. Freshman Jen Heberton (Darien\/Darien, Conn.) won the state and conference title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.76 seconds and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.<\/p>\n<p>Heberton team with senior Nicole Gundersen (Hollis Brookline\/Brookline, N.H.), junior Jovanna Hart (Bradford Area\/Bradford, Pa.) and freshman Shannon Archer (Niskayuna\/Scotia) to win the state and conference title in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.60 after recording a NCAA &quot;B&quot; cut in the preliminaries with a time of 1:38.10. Their time in the preliminaries was the third-fastest mark on the team&#39;s all-time list.<\/p>\n<p>Ithaca&#39;s team of junior Kelly Turpin (Mounds Park Academy\/Saint Paul, Minn.), sophomore Lauren Botterbusch (Dallastown\/York, Pa.), Heberton and Gundersen won the conference title in the and placed second in the state in the 400-yard medley relay with a NCAA preliminary qualifying time of 3:59.97, placing them fourth on the Bombers&#39; top-times list.<\/p>\n<p>Archer won the Empire 8 title and was the state runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.09, placing her ninth on Ithaca&#39;s top-times list. Gundersen placed fourth overall with a time of 5:17.07 and junior Gabby Faiella (Our lady of Mercy Academy\/North Bellmore) placed 14th in 5:26.09. Senior Kristy Gifford (Cheshire\/Cheshire, Conn.) also scored in the 500-yard freestyle, placing 17th with a time of 5:21.20.<\/p>\n<p>Hart placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.23 seconds, while Botterbusch was Ithaca&#39;s top-finisher in the 200-yard I.M., placing ninth with a time of 2:14.62. Turpin placed 16th in the 200-yard I.M. with a time of 2:24.08 and junior Kim Wheeler (Southern Cayuga Central\/Genoa) placed 19th with a time of 2:19.96.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SYRACUSE, New York, February 16.
