IN the final SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week, No. 2 Stanford outlasted No. 4 California, 169-131, in an incredibly fast men&#39;s dual meet.  In a competition that not only featured five lead changes, the two squads notched 11 A cuts and 50 B cuts at the end of the day.  <\/p>\n<p>Stanford closed the tilt with six A cuts and 28 B cuts, while Cal tabbed five A cuts and 22 B cuts. Additionally, Stanford finished the meet with 11 out of the 16 event titles.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#39;s Hongzhe Sun led with a meet-high three titles in the 100 back (46.98), 200 back (1:41.22) and the 200 IM (1:46.40), while teammates Shaun Phillips, Paul Kornfeld and Ben Wildman-Tobriner each snared a pair of titles.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips touched first in the 1000 free (9:04.24) and the 500 free (4:19.81), while Kornfeld swept the breaststroke events (100 \u2013 53.91, 200 \u2013 1:57.46).  Wildman-Tobriner completed the meet with wins in the 50 free (19.39) and the 100 free (43.30).<\/p>\n<p><b>200 medley relay<\/b><br \/>\nCal jumped out to an early 13-4 lead with a 1-3 finish in the 200 medley relay.  The foursome of David Russell, Richard Hunter, Jernej Godec and William Copeland clocked the second-fastest time in the 200 MR this year with an A-cut time of 1:25.88.  Stanford&#39;s quartet of Hongzhe Sun, Paul Kornfeld, Jason Dunford and Ben Wildman-Tobriner grabbed second in a B-cut time of 1:26.60, the fourth-fastest time of the year.<\/p>\n<p><b>1000 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nStanford cut the gap to 22-14 as Shaun Phillips registered the second-fastest time in college with a time of 9:04.24.  Cal&#39;s Daniel Lysaught took second with the third-best time of the year in 9:06.22.  Aaron Casey rounded out the top three for Cal in 9:15.65.<\/p>\n<p><b>200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nCal countered to take a 35-20 lead in the 200 free with a 1-2 finish.  Dominik Meichtry improved his own third-quickest time in the nation with an A-cut time of 1:34.51.  Teammate Nathan Adrian finished second in a B-cut 1:35.53, the seventh-fastest in the country, while Stanford&#39;s Andy Grant finished third in a B-cut time of 1:35.74.<\/p>\n<p><b>100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nStanford responded to shave the lead down to 43-31 in the 100 back.  Hongzhe Sun touched in an A-cut time of 46.98, the fourth-best time in the nation, while Cal&#39;s David Russell placed second in a B-cut time of 47.52.  Russell&#39;s teammate Mark Eckert took third in a B-cut time of 47.99 as the top five swimmers all cleared the B-cut standard.<\/p>\n<p><b>100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nStanford finally took the lead, 47-46, with a monster 1-2-3-4 effort in the 100 breast. Paul Kornfeld hit the wall in an A-cut time of 53.91 for the second-fastest time of the year, while teammates Keenan Newman (54.39), David Ash (55.05) and Nathan Cass (55.08) all eclipsed the B-cut threshold for second, third and fourth, respectively.  Richard Hunter finished fifth in 55.60 for Cal&#39;s top time.<\/p>\n<p><b>200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nCal bounced back to take a 58-54 advantage in the 200 fly.  Patrick O&#39;Neil won in a B-cut time of 1:44.98, the fifth-best time in the country, while Stanford&#39;s Jason Dunford (1:45.70) and Patrick Simpkins (1:46.88) both cleared the B-cut time to conclude the top three.  Dunford&#39;s time is the sixth-fastest in the nation, while fourth-place finisher Matthew Scanlan of Cal (1:47.82) also posted a provisional time.<\/p>\n<p><b>50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nStanford re-took the lead, 66-65, in the splash-and-dash, when Ben Wildman-Tobriner clocked the third-fastest time in the nation with a 19.39 for the win.  Meanwhile, Cal&#39;s Jernej Godec took second with an A-cut time of 19.55, while teammate William Copeland finished third with a B-cut time of 19.80.  Three other swimmers also cleared the B-cut standard.<\/p>\n<p><b>One-meter diving<\/b><br \/>\nCal fought back to grab a 76-74 advantage in the diving break.  Sam Helvie won with a 329.70-point tally, while Stanford&#39;s Dwight Dumais (279.97) and Kevin McLean (279.60) placed second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><b>100 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nStanford shaved the deficit to 85-84 in the 100 free.  Ben Wildman-Tobriner claimed his second event title with the fourth-fastest time in the nation of 43.30.  Cal&#39;s William Copeland finished second in a B-cut time of 43.45, while teammate Nathan Adrian placed third in a B-cut time of 43.78.  Copeland&#39;s time is the eighth-fastest in the nation.  Three other swimmers clocked B cuts.<\/p>\n<p><b>200 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nThe Cardinal grabbed a 96-92 lead in the 200 back with a 1-3 finish.  Hongzhe Sun, with his second crown of the meet, lowered his own second-fastest time in the 200 back with a winning effort of 1:41.22.  Cal&#39;s David Russell placed second in 1:44.27, while Stanford&#39;s Andy Grant took third in 1:44.54, both times cleared the B-cut standard.  Notably, the top 7 finishers all clocked B cuts.<\/p>\n<p><b>200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nStanford started pulling away in the 200 breast with a 1-2-3-4 to snag a 112-95 lead.  Paul Kornfeld swept the breaststroke events posted the fifth-quickest time in the nation with a 1:57.46.  Teammates David Ash (1:58.54), Nathan Cass (1:59.82) and Keenan Newman (1:59.97) all cleared the B cut for second through fourth.  Graham Lentz finished fifth for Cal&#39;s top effort in 2:04.58.<\/p>\n<p><b>500 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nThe Cardinal pushed its lead to 125-101 in the middle distance event.  Shaun Phillips doubled up with a B-cut time of 4:19.81, while teammate Daniel Beal placed third in a B-cut time of 4:24.24. Cal&#39;s Dominik Meichtry split the difference with a second-place B-cut time of 4:21.36.<\/p>\n<p><b>100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nThe Golden Bears showed some heart by battling back in the 100 fly, cutting the deficit to 131-114. Jernej Godec won in an A-cut time of 47.06, the sixth-fastest time in the nation.  Teammate Patrick O&#39;Neil finished third in 47.69, while Stanford&#39;s Jason Dunford placed second in 47.18.<\/p>\n<p><b>Three-meter diving<\/b><br \/>\nStanford snared a 144-120 lead in the second diving break.  Dwight Dumais emerged triumphant with a tally of 353.25 points.  Teammate Kevin McLean finished third with 274.60 points, while Cal&#39;s Sam Helvie placed second with 342.67 points.<\/p>\n<p><b>200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nHongzhe Sun recorded a trifecta with a first-place B-cut time of 1:46.40 to help Stanford to a 156-127 lead.  Cal&#39;s Louis Vayo placed second in a B-cut time of 1:48.21, while teammate Mark Eckert took third in a B-cut time of 1:49.07.<\/p>\n<p><b>400 freestyle relay<\/b><br \/>\nStanford completed the 169-131 victory when Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Jason Dunford, Andy Grant and Matt Crowe posted the second-fastest time in the nation with an A-cut time of 2:53.26.  Meanwhile, Cal&#39;s team of Nathan Adrian, William Copeland, Jernej Godec and Dominik Meichtry improved its own third-fastest time in the nation with an A-cut time of 2:53.51.
