VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania, February 4. GEORGETOWN Prep's Josh Hafkin and Good Counsel's Colleen Haase highlighted action at the National Catholic Championships, held at Villanova University the last weekend of January. Hafkin and Haase each turned in quality times in leading their teams to championships.<\/p>\n
On the male side, Georgetown Prep rolled up 326 points to outdistance Loyola Blakefield (278) and Malvern Prep (229.5). On the female side, Good Counsel was a runaway champion with 388 points. Mount DeSales took second (282) and Notre Dame Prep took third with 279.5 points.<\/p>\n
Hafkin registered his finest outing in his prime event, the 100 backstroke. The senior opened up a one-second lead during the opening half of the race and finished in 49.86, not far off the meet record of 49.71, set in 1998 by Olympian Tommy Hannan. Hafkin also anchored Georgetown to a win in the 400 free relay (3:12.37).<\/p>\n
Ryan Shea of Mount St. Joseph established a meet standard in the 100 freestyle, thanks to a swim of 45.90. He also placed first in the 200 free (1:40.52). The other meet record was set by Malvern Prep in the 200 free relay, as its foursome of John McGinley, Ian Whitney, Scott Dunlap and Tom McCarthy went 1:26.93.<\/p>\n
Haase stole the show among the women, on the strength of meet-record performances in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. After clocking 2:07.27 in the medley, she blazed through the 100 breast in 1:02.86.
