{"id":136034,"date":"2015-06-10T09:46:31","date_gmt":"2015-06-10T16:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=136034"},"modified":"2015-06-10T11:14:58","modified_gmt":"2015-06-10T18:14:58","slug":"katinka-hosszu-sizzles-with-world-best-in-400-im-in-barcelona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katinka-hosszu-sizzles-with-world-best-in-400-im-in-barcelona\/","title":{"rendered":"Katinka Hosszu Sizzles With World Best in 400 IM in Barcelona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> turned in the top time in the world in the women&#8217;s 400-meter IM to kick off the Mare Nostrum stop in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Hosszu hit the wall in 4:31.93 for the win, now ahead of <strong>Hannah Miley<\/strong>&#8216;s 4:32.15 from British Nationals as the top time in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Her swim is about a second-and-a-half off her European record of 4:30.31 from the 2009 World Championships. \u00a0The swim also downed Miley&#8217;s meet record of 4:33.25 set last year.<\/p>\n<p>Miley, meanwhile, took second overall in 4:36.96 with <strong>Catalina Corro<\/strong> placing third in the 400 IM with a 4:40.08.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rikke Moller Pedersen<\/strong> improved upon her second-ranked 200-meter breast with a time of 2:21.58 for the win. \u00a0That swim clipped her 2:21.60 from the Danish Open. \u00a0Only <strong>Kanako Watanabe<\/strong> has been faster this year with a 2:20.90 from Japanese Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Watanabe, meanwhile, settled for second tonight in 2:23.96 with <strong>Kierra Smith<\/strong> taking third overall in 2:24.87.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong> vaulted to second in the world in the men&#8217;s 200-meter fly with a time of 1:54.90. \u00a0That swim cleared the meet record of 1:55.18 of <strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong> from last year. \u00a0Seto is the only swimmer faster this year with a 1:54.46.<\/p>\n<p>Seto placed second tonight in 1:55.11, while <strong>Viktor Bromer<\/strong> picked up third in 1:55.46, just off his fifth-ranked 1:55.39 from the Danish Open.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong> also moved to second in the world with a time of 57.15 in the women&#8217;s 100-meter fly. \u00a0Only <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> is faster with a 56.58 from the Golden Tour in Marseilles.<\/p>\n<p>Ottesen&#8217;s time cleared her own meet record of 57.20 from last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran Halsall<\/strong> picked up second-place honors in 58.96, while <strong>Natsumi Hoshi<\/strong> posted a third-place time of 59.22.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jazmin Carlin<\/strong> took home the women&#8217;s 800-meter free in a time of 8:28.59. \u00a0That swim is well off her third-ranked 8:21.58 from British Nationals, but was more than enough to win tonight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keri-Anne Payne<\/strong> placed second in 8:30.16 with <strong>Melani Costa Schmid<\/strong> earning third in 8:32.08.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher Walker-Hebborn<\/strong> (25.23) and <strong>Liam Tancock<\/strong> (25.48) went 1-2 in the men&#8217;s 50-meter backstroke.\u00a0<strong>Takeshi Kawamoto<\/strong> placed third in 25.50.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moniek Nijhuis<\/strong> topped the women&#8217;s 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 30.93. \u00a0That&#8217;s a bit off her fifth-ranked season best of 30.65 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> finished second in 31.08 with <strong>Sally Hunter<\/strong> earning third overall in 31.31.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ben Proud<\/strong> notched a win in the men&#8217;s 50-meter fly with a time of 23.70. He&#8217;s been a bit faster this year with a 15th-ranked 23.51 from British Nationals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Konrad Czerniak<\/strong> placed second in 23.89, well off his 10th-ranked 23.43 from Spanish Nationals, while <strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong> finished third in 23.92.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sebastiaan Verschuren<\/strong>, already ranked fourth in the world with a 48.25 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup, won the men&#8217;s 100-meter free in 49.01.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katsumi Nakamura<\/strong> hit the wall second in 49.14, while <strong>Andrey Grechin<\/strong> snagged third overall in 49.50.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mie Nielsen<\/strong>, third ranked in the world with a 59.14 from the Golden Tour in Marseilles, won the women&#8217;s 100-meter back in 59.37.<\/p>\n<p>That swim beat the meet record of 59.47 set by <strong>Aya Terakawa<\/strong> back in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elizabeth Simmonds<\/strong> took second tonight in 1:00.23 with <strong>Georgia Davies<\/strong> earning third in 1:00.39.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>, who set the 100 breast world record with a 57.92 at British Nationals in April, clinched the event title here in Barcelona with a 59.55. \u00a0That&#8217;s a bit slower than his meet record of 59.25 from last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong>, ranked third in the world with a 59.73 from Japanese Nationals, took second tonight in 59.81. \u00a0<strong>Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> wound up third overall in 1:00.68.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> hit the wall in 24.59 to win the women&#8217;s 50-meter free. \u00a0That&#8217;s a bit off her third-ranked 24.35 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong>, ranked sixth in the world with a 24.47, took second in 24.64. \u00a0<strong>Fran Halsall<\/strong> put up a 24.76 to take third tonight, off her fifth-ranked 24.37 from British Nationals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryosuke Irie<\/strong>, ranked #1 in the world with a 1:54.62 from the BHP Super Series, cranked out a 1:55.55 to win the men&#8217;s 200-meter back in Barcelona. \u00a0That&#8217;s nearly better than the second-ranked time of 1:55.52 set by <strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masaki Kaneko<\/strong> touched well back in second in 1:57.50, while <strong>Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong> wound up third in 1:57.74.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 1:56.30 from Japanese Nationals, won the men&#8217;s 200-meter IM in a meet-record time of 1:57.75. \u00a0That effort cleared <strong>Laszlo Cseh&#8217;s<\/strong> mark of 1:58.94 from 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Wallace<\/strong> wound up second overall in 2:00.71 with <strong>Roberto Pavoni<\/strong> taking third in 2:02.18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> raced her way to a meet record in the women&#8217;s 200-meter free with a time of 1:55.22. \u00a0That swim cut a second off <strong>Veronika Popova&#8217;s<\/strong> 1:56.20 from last year. \u00a0 Her time is a bit off Heemskerk&#8217;s world-best 1:54.68 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siobhan Marie O&#8217;Connor<\/strong> placed second in 1:57.23, while <strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong> touched third in 1:57.91.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicholas Granger<\/strong> topped <strong>Ryan Cochrane<\/strong>, 3:48.29 to 3:48.69, in the men&#8217;s 400-meter free. \u00a0<strong>James Guy<\/strong> placed third in 3:48.83.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/results\/2015-mare-nostrum-barcelona-day-one-day-1\/international-elite\/2015\/June\/10\" target=\"_blank\">2015 Mare Nostrum Barcelona, Day One &#8211; Results<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hungary&#8217;s Katinka Hosszu turned in the top time in the world in the women&#8217;s 400-meter IM to kick off the Mare Nostrum stop in Barcelona.
