LAWRENCE, Kansas, January 27. THE University of Kansas swimmers and divers defeated the Iowa State Cyclones, 183.5-109.5, Saturday after the second day of the two-day Big 12 showdown. The Jayhawks recorded first-place victories in 14 of the 17 events between the two teams, two of those victories coming from Kansas seniors Jenny Short and Emily Knopp.<\/p>\n
Prior to Friday evening's events, the seven Kansas seniors were recognized in their last home meet of the 2006-07 season. Short recorded a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (56.57), while Knopp finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.44). Sophomore Danielle Herrmann went undefeated in both breaststroke events, finishing with a time of 1:04.42 in the 100-yard event and 2:21.38 in the 200-yard breast.<\/p>\n
Kansas sophomore Maria Mayrovich rallied for the Jayhawks in the freestyle events with victories in the 50 -yard freestyle (23.73), 100-yard freestyle (51.04), while contributing to the first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:45.13) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.64).<\/p>\n
Sophomore Jessica Brozek walked away with the top time in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a 57.84, while junior Lauren Bonfe won the second heat of the event (58.47). Freshman Alicia Casillas was the top finisher in the distance freestyle events for the 'Hawks. She walked away with first-place victories in the 1000-yard free (10:02.19) and the 500-yard free (4:55.89). Casillas also added depth for Kansas in the 200-yard free, finishing third (1:52.79). Junior Terri Schramka led the pack in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.84, stacking another Jayhawk victory.<\/p>\n
"There was two purposes to our meet with Iowa State," head coach Clark Campbell said. "First we celebrated our seniors and secondly, the Iowa State coach and I wanted to run this meet similar to a championship meet with half of the events at 6 p.m. and the other half at 10 a.m. so it gave both teams the opportunity to experience racing at both times because that is what we'll see at Big 12's with prelims and finals."<\/p>\n
On the diving front, junior Jenny Roberts led the way for Kansas with first-place finishes on both the one-meter and three-meter boards. Roberts finished with 295.88 points on the three-meter and 252.75 points on the one-meter. Senior Shelby Noonan left a narrow margin between herself and Roberts on the one-meter, finishing with 252.52. Freshmen Meghan Proehl (245.09) and Allison Ho (171.29), along with sophomore Hannah McMacken (144.46) added depth in the one-meter competition.<\/p>\n
"Things are coming together really well for us," diving coach Eric Elliott said. "Finishing one-two-three (on the one-meter) was great for our confidence. We'll be ready to go in a couple of weeks for Conference."<\/p>\n
