CRANBURY, New Jersey, January 22. WITH another weekend in the books, it's time to take a look at the leading developments from the past few days. In Australia, Cate Campbell put on a show in the 50-meter freestyle at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Meanwhile, the American college scene continued to sizzle as a number of quality meets unfolded.<\/p>\n
**With the likes of Libby Lenton, Jodie Henry and Alice Mills in the arsenal, Australia is far from in need of another standout sprinter. But, the country's depth in the sprints continues to improve with the emergence of Cate Campbell. At the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, the 14-year-old cooked up a mark of 24.89 in the 50 freestyle.<\/p>\n
By producing the sixth-fastest time in the world this year, Campbell instantly made herself a contender for a berth to the Beijing Olympic Games, although she'll face some serious competition just to receive that invitation. Campbell is now the fifth-quickest Aussie of all-time and adds a spark to an already rich contingent of women from Australia.<\/p>\n
**Since arriving at Northwestern University, Matt Grevers has been a star in the backstroke disciplines, evident in his ability to become an NCAA champion. More, Grevers has been stellar in the sprint-freestyle events for the Wildcats. But, what he's been doing in the 200 individual medley has been equally impressive, if not a little surprising.<\/p>\n
As Northwestern defeated Notre Dame in dual-meet action over the weekend, Grevers prevailed in the 200 IM with a sparkling performance of 1:45.12. Producing that type of swim in dual-meet action suggests that Grevers is capable of winning an NCAA title in the event, provided he puts it on his schedule for March. While Grevers will certainly race the 100 and 200 backstrokes, it will be interesting to see if he tackles the medley over the 50 free.<\/p>\n
**In her second season as coach, since replacing Richard Quick on The Farm, Lea Maurer kept Stanford undefeated over the weekend, thanks to a decision of Southern California. Stanford's freshmen have been superb from the get-go, most notably Julia Smit and Elaine Breeden. With those two youngsters, along with a resurgent Caroline Bruce, the Cardinal could make a run at the NCAA championship.<\/p>\n
A 2004 Olympian in the 200 breaststroke, Bruce won that event against USC, touching the wall in 2:11.31. Bruce has bounced back from an injury-plagued sophomore season and will be in the mix for crowns at the NCAA championships. As a freshman, Bruce swept the breast events at the NCAA championships and finished third in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n
**Less than a week after the passing of Associate Director of Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving
\nRalph Crocker, Auburn earned a pair of wins over Florida. Cesar Cielo competed in his first meet of the season and clocked in at 43.19 in the 100 freestyle for the men's team. Cielo's presence in the sprints will go a long way in determining whether Auburn can win another NCAA team crown.<\/p>\n
**Like Stanford on the women's side, the men from the University of Texas stayed unbeaten with triumphs over Arizona and Southern Methodist. The Longhorns, who might be the favorites for the NCAA championship, received strong showings from Matt McGinnis (200 free), Ricky Berens (200 butterfly) and Thomas Sacco (100 backstroke), among others.<\/p>\n
