BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, January 21. THE Hoosiers earned a 170-130 win Senior Day over No. 24 Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
Vaziri won four events on the day, while Lofstedt took three and Weigle won two. The 13th-ranked Hoosiers claimed 15 of the 16 events on the day to finish the dual season with a 5-0 overall record, including a 1-0 mark in the Big Ten. The undefeated season is IU's first since going 3-0 in 1977-78, and just the second in school history.<\/p>\n
Vaziri made the most of her final home dual meet, winning the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Coral Springs, Fla., native teamed with Sarah Stockwell, Presley Bard and Lofstedt to post the third-fastest time in IU history in the 200 medley relay, 1:41.47. The mark was good for an NCAA provisional qualifying time.<\/p>\n
In addition to helping win the 200 medley relay, Lofstedt posted victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.52) and the 100-yard freestyle, picking up an NCAA "B" cut in the 100 free with a time of 50.93. The Orebo, Sweden, product was touched out at the wall in the 100-yard butterfly, turning in a time of 56.08 to finish second behind freshman Donna Smailis (55.96).<\/p>\n
Weigle, the reigning Big Ten Diver of the Week, won the three-meter and the platform for the Hoosiers, taking the three-meter with a score of 331.80 and the platform with a score of 306.45. The Bloomington native's score in the platform was the fourth-best in school history, giving Weigle three of the top four spots. <\/p>\n
"The women did great again," assistant diving coach Todd Waikel said. "We don't do too much to prepare for the dual meets, we just really train right through them, and the girls stepped up and did a great job. In particular, Lindsay Weigle did a great job. Jade Summerlin did a real nice job on three-meter and Britney Yancey made her Zone cut."<\/p>\n
Freshman Cassie Luhrsen continued to lead the distance free squad, as she picked up wins in the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Her 16:40.91 effort in the mile was good for her third "B" cut of the season in the event, while her time of 4:54.03 in the 500 free was a mere 0.01 seconds off the "B" cut standard.<\/p>\n
Stockwell and Bard were the only other dual winners for the Hoosiers. In addition to her role in winning the 200 medley relay, Stockwell tightened her grip on the 100-yard breaststroke crown, turning in a time of 1:03.19 for the win. The time was the fourth-fastest in school history, all of which belong to Stockwell, with three of them coming this season. Bard added a win in the 800 free relay to go with her 200 medley win.<\/p>\n
Indiana went 1-2-3 in the 100 breast, with Emily Schlatter and Abby Cooper following Stockwell, in that order. IU also swept the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with Brittany Barwegen picking up the win with a "B" cut time of 2:01.83. Allison Kay followed in second with a "B" cut of her own (2:02.55), while Christie Fuchs finished third in 2:05.60.<\/p>\n
Kristin Cihoski (100-yard backstroke, 56.80), Amilee Smith (200-yard breaststroke, 2:18.65), Emily Berry (800 free relay) and Emily Lanteigne (800 free relay) also picked up wins for Indiana.<\/p>\n
Vaziri, Lofstedt, Summerlin, Weigle, Heather Chapman, Susanna Ernst, and Clarissa Wentworth were all honored before the meet. Chapman's top finish was a second-place effort on the platform, while Ernst's highlighted her final home dual was a sixth-place showing in the 200 back. Summerlin was fourth in both the three-meter and the platform, while Wentworth finished fourth in the 100 free and third in the 800 free relay.<\/p>\n
The 2007 senior class compiled a dual record of 25-8 over the last four seasons.<\/p>\n
"It was a nice last nice home for our seniors," head coach Ray Looze said. "They've had great careers here, both on the women's side and the men's side. We had some nice swims, some surprises, and we're right where we want to be in preparation for Big Tens."<\/p>\n
While diver Christina Loukas will participate in the World Championship Selection Camp II from Jan. 21-25 in Indianapolis, the rest of the Indiana team will now prepare for the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 8-10 in Minneapolis, Minn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
