UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, January 19. COMPETING for the first time since December 2,
\nthe Penn State women's swimming and diving team won eight out of 13
\nevents and tied for first with Ohio State in one other event to
\nimprove to 6-0 on the season in dual meets with a 141.5-98.5 win over
\nvisiting Ohio State on Friday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium in what
\nwas the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Dual Meet of the Week. The women's
\nteam will be joined by the men's team tomorrow at noon as the Nittany
\nLions will take on Rutgers in the final home meet of the year.<\/p>\n
The meet got off to an exciting start as the Nittany Lions' and
\nBuckeyes' top 200 medley relay teams tied for first place in a time
\nof 1:46.62. The Nittany Lion team of Kelly Nelson, Abby Hoisington,
\nKarie Haglund and Michelle Myers swam the second-fastest time of the
\nyear for Penn State in that event. Penn State also picked up points
\nwith a third place finish by the team of Daphne Skelos, Lyndsey
\nSmith, Lindsey DeForrest and Genie Cheng.<\/p>\n
In the 1000 free, Nikki Collins won her third 1000 race of the year
\nin a time of 10:08.48 and just behind her was Sarah Baker in second
\nat 10:11.32. The first place finish was also Collins' fifth overall
\non the season.<\/p>\n
Kaitlin O'Brien earned her seventh first place finish of the year by
\nwinning the 200 free in a time of 1:50.33, just .03 of a second off
\nan NCAA 'B' cut. Claire Hawley finished third and Erin Morris placed
\nfourth.<\/p>\n
The Nittany Lions had three swimmers pick up points in the 50 free as
\nwell as DeForrest and Cheng tied for second in :24.43 and Rachel
\nAhrenhold came in fifth in :24.94. Ahrenhold and DeForrest each swam
\ntheir fastest times of the year in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
Megan Palera won her first race of the year as she took first in the
\n200 IM in 2:05.64. She was followed in second by Hoisington in
\n2:07.54 while Clare Clemens also picked up points with a fourth place
\nfinish in her fastest time of the year in the 200 IM, 2:09.49.<\/p>\n
Kailey Morris picked up her second first place finish in the 200
\nbutterfly this year with an NCAA 'B' time of 2:00.78, although she
\nhas already swam a faster 'B' time this year. Karie Haglund, who
\nalready owns an 'A' automatic NCAA cut in the 200 fly, placed second
\nin 2:01.05 and has made either an 'A' time or a 'B' time in every one
\nof her swims in the 200 fly this year.<\/p>\n
Penn State finished 2-3-4 in the 200 backstroke with Jessica Barnes,
\nO'Brien and Kaitlyn Ferguson coming in second, third and fourth. The
\nNittany Lions then once again dominated a distance event as they
\nfinished 1-2-3. Nelson, swimming the 500 for just the second time
\nthis year after winning her first 500 last month in a career-best
\ntime, swam the third-best time of her career in taking first again in
\n4:56.06. Palera took second in season-best 5:00.15 while Jaime Keily
\nfinished third in 5:01.90, over seven second faster than the fourth
\nplace finisher.<\/p>\n
Lyndsey Smith won the 200 breaststroke in her best time of the year,
\n2:18.09, just .44 of a second short of an NCAA 'B' cut. Clemens took
\nthird in that event.The meet wrapped up with Penn State taking first
\nin the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Cheng, Myers, Nelson and
\nMolly Crispell swam a time of 1:35.18, the best time of the year for
\nPenn State in that event.<\/p>\n
In the diving events, Kimberlee Peifer compiled her highest score of
\nthe year on the one-meter board with a 280.25 to win that event, her
\nthird first place finish of the year in the one-meter. Courtney Adlam
\nalso scored her highest point total of the year in the one-meter with
\na 276.38 to take fourth and Jocelyn Avery took fifth. In the
\nthree-meter, Adlam placed third with a 294.00 while Peifer took
\nfourth and Avery took fifth with a career best score of 206.77.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow's dual meet with Rutgers will also be Senior Day as 10
\nseniors will compete for Penn State at McCoy Natatorium for the final
