COMPETING for the first time since December 2,<br \/>\nthe Penn State women&#39;s swimming and diving team won eight out of 13<br \/>\nevents and tied for first with Ohio State in one other event to<br \/>\nimprove to 6-0 on the season in dual meets with a 141.5-98.5 win over<br \/>\nvisiting Ohio State on Friday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium in what<br \/>\nwas the SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Dual Meet of the Week. The women&#39;s<br \/>\nteam will be joined by the men&#39;s team tomorrow at noon as the Nittany<br \/>\nLions will take on Rutgers in the final home meet of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The meet got off to an exciting start as the Nittany Lions&#39; and<br \/>\nBuckeyes&#39; top 200 medley relay teams tied for first place in a time<br \/>\nof 1:46.62. The Nittany Lion team of Kelly Nelson, Abby Hoisington,<br \/>\nKarie Haglund and Michelle Myers swam the second-fastest time of the<br \/>\nyear for Penn State in that event. Penn State also picked up points<br \/>\nwith a third place finish by the team of Daphne Skelos, Lyndsey<br \/>\nSmith, Lindsey DeForrest and Genie Cheng.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1000 free, Nikki Collins won her third 1000 race of the year<br \/>\nin a time of 10:08.48 and just behind her was Sarah Baker in second<br \/>\nat 10:11.32. The first place finish was also Collins&#39; fifth overall<br \/>\non the season.<\/p>\n<p>Kaitlin O&#39;Brien earned her seventh first place finish of the year by<br \/>\nwinning the 200 free in a time of 1:50.33, just .03 of a second off<br \/>\nan NCAA &#39;B&#39; cut. Claire Hawley finished third and Erin Morris placed<br \/>\nfourth.<\/p>\n<p>The Nittany Lions had three swimmers pick up points in the 50 free as<br \/>\nwell as DeForrest and Cheng tied for second in :24.43 and Rachel<br \/>\nAhrenhold came in fifth in :24.94. Ahrenhold and DeForrest each swam<br \/>\ntheir fastest times of the year in the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>Megan Palera won her first race of the year as she took first in the<br \/>\n200 IM in 2:05.64. She was followed in second by Hoisington in<br \/>\n2:07.54 while Clare Clemens also picked up points with a fourth place<br \/>\nfinish in her fastest time of the year in the 200 IM, 2:09.49.<\/p>\n<p>Kailey Morris picked up her second first place finish in the 200<br \/>\nbutterfly this year with an NCAA &#39;B&#39; time of 2:00.78, although she<br \/>\nhas already swam a faster &#39;B&#39; time this year. Karie Haglund, who<br \/>\nalready owns an &#39;A&#39; automatic NCAA cut in the 200 fly, placed second<br \/>\nin 2:01.05 and has made either an &#39;A&#39; time or a &#39;B&#39; time in every one<br \/>\nof her swims in the 200 fly this year.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State finished 2-3-4 in the 200 backstroke with Jessica Barnes,<br \/>\nO&#39;Brien and Kaitlyn Ferguson coming in second, third and fourth. The<br \/>\nNittany Lions then once again dominated a distance event as they<br \/>\nfinished 1-2-3. Nelson, swimming the 500 for just the second time<br \/>\nthis year after winning her first 500 last month in a career-best<br \/>\ntime, swam the third-best time of her career in taking first again in<br \/>\n4:56.06. Palera took second in season-best 5:00.15 while Jaime Keily<br \/>\nfinished third in 5:01.90, over seven second faster than the fourth<br \/>\nplace finisher.<\/p>\n<p>Lyndsey Smith won the 200 breaststroke in her best time of the year,<br \/>\n2:18.09, just .44 of a second short of an NCAA &#39;B&#39; cut. Clemens took<br \/>\nthird in that event.The meet wrapped up with Penn State taking first<br \/>\nin the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Cheng, Myers, Nelson and<br \/>\nMolly Crispell swam a time of 1:35.18, the best time of the year for<br \/>\nPenn State in that event.<\/p>\n<p>In the diving events, Kimberlee Peifer compiled her highest score of<br \/>\nthe year on the one-meter board with a 280.25 to win that event, her<br \/>\nthird first place finish of the year in the one-meter. Courtney Adlam<br \/>\nalso scored her highest point total of the year in the one-meter with<br \/>\na 276.38 to take fourth and Jocelyn Avery took fifth. In the<br \/>\nthree-meter, Adlam placed third with a 294.00 while Peifer took<br \/>\nfourth and Avery took fifth with a career best score of 206.77.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow&#39;s dual meet with Rutgers will also be Senior Day as 10<br \/>\nseniors will compete for Penn State at McCoy Natatorium for the final<br \/>\ntime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, January 19.
