Alex Murphy became the fourth member of Swim Ireland\u2019s team for this summer\u2019s world championships with a 27.56 to win the 50 breaststroke at the Irish Open. The 19-year-old from the University College Dublin team spoke with Swimming World\u2019s Jeff Commings about his qualifying swim saying it was not a goal coming into the meet, but became one after he swam fast in prelims.<\/p>\n

Murphy talked about growing up and racing the current 50 breast national record holder, Barry Murphy, and the realization that he\u2019s now Ireland\u2019s top breaststroker. He spoke of training with his team as the only breaststroker, and how he\u2019s already looking ahead to pursuing a spot on Ireland\u2019s Olympic team.<\/p>\n
