PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, January 14. IT was a big day in Sheerr pool, as the men's swimming team hosted its first home meet of the season, and the women faced off against a team that they've only beaten once in Penn swimming history.<\/p>\n
The Brown Bears came into the meet with the men's record at 1-1, and the women holding strong at 2-1. In the end, the Penn men lost to Brown, 174.50-125.50, while the women pulled off their first win over the Bears since 1988, and only their second in history, with a 180-120 victory.<\/p>\n
The women's 200-yard medley relay team started the meet with a first-place finish, as Stephanie Colson, Megan Carlin, Tara Gillies and Lauren Brandes combined for a time of 1:48.27. The men's 200 medley relay team of Chris Weitekamp, Alex Silvester, Brian Gartner and John Gillette completed its race in 1:35.60, finishing in first just one-tenth of a second ahead of the Brown team.<\/p>\n
In the 1000-yard free, Margot Newcomer came in first for the women, in 10:20.73, while Katherine Donohue finished second at 10:22.99. On the men's side, James Fee came in second with a time of 9:41.97.<\/p>\n
Freshman Sara Coenen continued to add wins to her impressive total, as she took first in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:53.30, a full second faster than the next swimmer. Coenen also took first in the 100-yard backstroke (57.82) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.46).<\/p>\n
In the men's 200-yard free, Pat Gallagher lost a close race to Brown's Daniel Ricketts, as Ricketts took first at 1:42.48 while Gallagher was right behind him at 1:42.56. The 100-yard backstroke was also a close race, as Ted Rainaud and Weitekamp finished in second and third with times of 53.08, and 53.21, respectively.<\/p>\n
Carlin earned another first-place finish for the Quakers, as she won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.58. Freshman Stephanie Nerby also helped to boost the point total, as she took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.04. Alison Bretherick was right behind her in second place with a time of 2:06.14.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, Devon Carr took first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.99, while John Gillette came in first in the 50 free with a time of 21.55, just two-tenths of a second ahead of his competition.<\/p>\n
Colson took home another first place for the women, finishing the 50 free in 24.52, while Brandes was right behind her in second with a time of 24.74. Brandes also finished second in the 100 free with a time of 53.86 — only a tenth of a second behind teammate Andrea Balint, who came in first with a time of 53.71.<\/p>\n
Gallagher had another close race in the 100 free, as he lost to Brown's Brian Kelly by a margin of just five-hundredths of a second. Gallagher came in at 46.97, while Kelly finished in 46.92.<\/p>\n
In the 500-yard freestyle, senior Cameron Villarreal took first place with a time of 5:05.35. Her teammate, Newcomer, was right behind in second, as she finished in 5:05.81. The women also had key wins in the 100-yard butterfly, as Stephanie Nerby finished first in 58.48, and in the 200-yard IM, in which Balint took first in 2:10.88.<\/p>\n
In diving, Janis Scanlon took first place in the one-meter dive with 253.80 total points.<\/p>\n
