PULLMAN, Washington, January 14. – Senior Erin McCleave broke a 26-year old Gibb Pool record in the 1650 freestyle as the Cougars swam to a 161-92 victory over the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks Saturday afternoon at WSU's Gibb Pool. WSU was paced by McCleave and freshman Shawna Keller who both turned in 27 points for the Cougar side.<\/p>\n
In McCleave's first event of the day, the 1650 freestyle, the Rutherglen, Australia native recorded a time of 16:49.79 to take first place, shattering a Gibb Pool record in the process. The previous record had not been broken since Oregon State's Holly Andrus swam a time of 17:10.16 in the event in 1981.<\/p>\n
McCleave also captured first place in the 50 freestyle (24.18) and the 200 backstroke (2:08.32).<\/p>\n
Shawna Keller began the day with a victory as she contributed to the first place 200 medley relay squad. The combination of Bryn Mooney, Elyse Peterson, Michaela Ahlin and Keller took the top spot with a time of 1:47.39. Keller also was victorious in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.39) and the 200 breaststroke (2:25.46). She also took first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:08.98.<\/p>\n
In the 200 freestyle, WSU claimed the top two spots as Michaela Ahlin turned in a time of 1:53.28 for first place while Danielle Berish's time of 1:56.10 was good enough for second place. Ahlin also came in first in the 100 butterfly (57.01). Bryn Mooney was victorious in the 100 backstroke (59.97) with senior Lindsay Backhouse taking second in the event. Kayli Changstrom earned her first of two individual wins in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:10.33. Her second win of the afternoon came in the 500 freestyle (5:06.57).<\/p>\n
McKenzie Reiter placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.45 and Brett Bogachus took third place in the 200 butterfly (2:11.86).
\nAs a team, the Cougars also came in first in the 400 freestyle relay as Berish, McCleave, Backhouse and Changstrom swam the relay in a time of 3:33.61.<\/p>\n
For the Lumberjacks, Corie Collins took first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.19.<\/p>\n
WSU travels to Corvallis, Ore. to face Pac-10 opponent Oregon State in an 11:00 a.m. dual meet Saturday, Jan. 20. Last year, the Cougars edged the Beavers in a 134.5-127.5 thriller to earn their first victory over OSU since 2002.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
