WALTHAM, Massachusetts, January 14. THE Engineers improved to a 5-1 record this season when they defeated Brandeis Univeristy, 164-128, in non conference action on Saturday afternoon. The judges fell to 1-7. <\/p>\n
Junior captain Doria Holbrook secured an NCAA qualifying score of 276.08 in the one-meter diving competition and freshman Ashley Pinchinat swam a lifetime best 2:05.73 in the 200-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
Holbrook, who earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Accolades last season, also notched a score of 241.80 in three-meter diving, good for second place.<\/p>\n
Senior Katherine Thornton was once again Tech's most consistent contributor, picking up three of the Cardinal and Gray's 10 victories. The El Cajon, Calif., native took individual top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.23) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.29) and was also part of the victorious 400-yard medley relay squad along with junior Sasha Brophy, sophomore Jen Chao and freshman Priya Parayanthal (4:17.08).<\/p>\n
The Engineers were most impressive in the 50-yard freestyle, in which the trio of senior captain Stephanie Sidelko (25.43), Brophy (26.71) and Chao (27.01) finished 1-2-3, respectively.<\/p>\n
MIT also took the top two spots in a number of other events. Pinchinat (57.73) and senior captain Jessica Harpole (59.22) finished 1-2, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle, while freshman Rachel Price (5:37.73) and junior Katy Sorenson (5:44.53) took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle. Meanwhile, sophomore Nicole O'Keeffe (2:22.76) finished second behind Thornton in the 200-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n
Tech also received individual victories from O'Keeffe in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:01.78), Parayanthal in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.85) and freshman Ellie Souganidis (1:14.35) in the 100-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n
The diving portion of the meet was hosted by MIT on Saturday morning, while the swimming competition was hosted by Brandeis later in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
MIT will not have much time to celebrate its victory, as the Engineers will return to Cambridge to host New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foes U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Springfield College on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. Brandeis will host another NEWMAC school, Clark University, on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
