MOSCOW, Idaho, January 12. WITH wins in eight of 14 events, it came down to the end but the Northern Arizona swim team pulled off a 138-124 win against the University of Idaho on the road. Alexis Buckley grabbed a win in the second-to-last event, the 400 individual medley, and NAU's 200 freestyle relay team sealed the deal with a convincing win to end the meet.
\nIdaho competes in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) with NAU, setting up what is bound to be a close competition again between the two teams at the conference meet in February.<\/p>\n
Buckley teamed up with Maria Hechanova, Rachael Foe and Corie Collins for a win in the opening event, the 400 medley relay, in a time of 3:59.40. Idaho's Paige Lee then captured the 1,000 freestyle, but NAU's Becky Triemstra and Candace Fajardo placed second and third in the event.<\/p>\n
Buckley won again with a time of 1:54.34 in the 200 freestyle, but it was the Vandals who got wins in the 100 backstroke, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly before the Lumberjacks finally grabbed another win as Tami Binek swam a winning time of 24.53 in the 50 freestyle.<\/p>\n
Collins got an individual win in the 100 freestyle, and Buckley once again came out on top in the 500 freestyle. Foe then gave the Lumberjacks an edge by winning the 100 butterfly, and Buckley's 400 IM win along with NAU's 200 freestyle relay win finished off the day.<\/p>\n
Collins, Foe, Binek and Lindsey Miller swam the winning relay time of 1:37.83 in the final event. Buckley finished the day with three individual wins along with a relay win for NAU.<\/p>\n
"It wasn't just the people that won, but others who swam great for us today," said head coach Andy Johns. "It was exciting. Swimming up here has been a great experience, it was a great venue and a great atmosphere, and I'm glad we came out on the winning end of things."<\/p>\n
NAU will return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 13 for a meet at Washington State out of the PAC-10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
