{"id":132376,"date":"2015-04-19T09:17:36","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T16:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=132376"},"modified":"2015-04-19T16:19:04","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T23:19:04","slug":"bob-bowman-michael-phelps-coach-in-mix-for-arizona-state-coaching-position","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bob-bowman-michael-phelps-coach-in-mix-for-arizona-state-coaching-position\/","title":{"rendered":"Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps&#8217; Coach, In Mix For Arizona State Coaching Position"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Bowman, the head coach and CEO of North Baltimore Aquatic Club and Michael Phelps&#8217; mentor, is in the mix for the vacant Arizona State University head coaching position, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\" target=\"_blank\">according to Arizona Republic&#8217;s Jeff Metcalfe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the men&#8217;s basketball position filled by former Duke great Bobby Hurley, ASU athletic director Ray Anderson is swinging for the fences as he looks to replace Dorsey Tierney-Walker, <a title=\"Dorsey Tierney-Walker Fired As Arizona State Swimming Coach\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dorsey-tierney-walker-fired-as-arizona-state-swimming-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\">who was let go on March 31 from the head coaching position<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman, who was in town with Phelps and the rest of the NBAC crew for the Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa, confirmed to Metcalfe that he made a campus visit this week.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was just down there,&#8221; Bowman said Saturday night at the Arena Pro Series Mesa meet when asked if he had been approached about the ASU opening. &#8220;I just don&#8217;t know anything about it right now.\u00a0It seems like there is a potential there. The pool has always been good, I&#8217;ve been there. At this point, I couldn&#8217;t make a really informed guess about it. I&#8217;ll talk to everybody who contacts me.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bowman not only has been at the helm of Phelps&#8217; tremendous career that includes 22 Olympic medals, Bowman&#8217;s swimmers have also set 43 world records under his tutelage.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman also has coached in college when he followed Phelps to the University of Michigan for four years. \u00a0He coached the Wolverines during that time period, and won Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008, before returning to NBAC with Phelps.<\/p>\n<p>Metcalfe also reports that Southern California assistant coach Jeremy Kipp is among the candidates up for the position.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman is in a unique position where he could bring his stable of pro athletes with him to Arizona, Michael Phelps included, since these athletes do not have committments to a university. \u00a0Their presence would only ehance the college program. \u00a0Bowman owns the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, so he could hire coaching replacements for that program and a Chief Operating Officer\u00a0to oversee its operations. \u00a0The hiring of Bowman would certainly jump start the program immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman has NCAA coaching experience as the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bob-bowman-coach-of-michael-phelps-and-the-university-of-michigan-will-leave-michigan-and-go-back-into-club-coaching\/\" target=\"_blank\"> former head coach for the University of Michigan<\/a>. \u00a0He announced that he was leaving\u00a0that position in April of 2008 to assume chief executive officer responsibilities at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and will prepare swimmers for Olympic and international competition.\u00a0&#8220;This is a professional business opportunity that I felt I needed to pursue,&#8221; Bowman said at the time. &#8220;It has been a privilege and honor for me to coach at the University of Michigan, and my four years here have been extremely meaningful. I have enjoyed working with the student-athletes and representing the University, and I plan to continue a close relationship with U-M for a long time to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The question remains as to whether ASU will fully fund the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/more-reaction-on-arizona-state-program-cuts-5-million-needed-to-save-mens-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\"> ASU Men&#8217;s program<\/a> with scholarships since it was cut about the same time that Bob Bowman resigned from the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Kipp is an interesting candidate who is ready for a head coaching position after serving many years as the assistant head coach for the University of Southern California (USC). \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/drought-usc-wins-first-mens-pac-12-championship-title-36-years\/\">USC won the Pac 12 Women&#8217;s Swimming and Diving Championships <\/a>this past season. \u00a0 With ASU being in the Pac 12, this is certainly a plus for Kipp who has strong recruiting skills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Bowman, the head coach and CEO of North Baltimore Aquatic Club and Michael Phelps&#8217;
