PHOENIX, Arizona, January 11. AS another part of Swimming World Magazine's<\/i> increased coverage of collegiate swimming that includes the Meet of the Week program and a much deeper College channel on our site, we are debuting our National Collegiate Swimmers of the Week awards this week.<\/p>\n
The first winners are Division I Northwestern's Kassia Shishkoff and Division II Missouri-Rolla's Matt Hug.<\/p>\n
Although Northwestern wound up falling to No. 16 Tennessee, 210-139, Shishkoff did her part in the upset bid. In the afternoon session, she set a Norris Aquatics Center pool record in the 1650 free with a B-cut time of 16:28.01. That effort eclipsed the previous standard of 16:33.80 set by Stanford's Amy Olberhelman 10 years ago. Also in the afternoon, the freshman won the 200 free in 1:49.43. During the morning session, she clocked a B-cut time of 4:48.78 to win the 500 free by seven seconds and nearly down the pool record. She also provisionally qualified in the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.95. That performance also scored Shishkoff Collegeswimming.com<\/i> National Division I Female Swimmer of the Week accolades.<\/p>\n
"I was kind of surprised with my performances when I touched the wall and looked up at the clock, because it didn't feel like I was going that much faster than I had been earlier in the year," Shishkoff said. "It's a great honor for myself and our team to receive the first Swimmer of the Week award from Swimming World Magazine<\/i>. We are a small team, but a very high quality team, and I think we are going to surprise some people at the Big Ten Championships this year."<\/p>\n
This past weekend, the Missouri-Rolla squad grabbed 11 event titles en route to the University of Indianapolis Invite crown with 905 points to nearly double the second-place finisher. Hug proved to be an integral part of that effort as he owned the distance events with three wins. On the first day, he won the 200 free in 1:42.85 and the 1650 free in 16:16.94. Both of those times eclipsed the B-cut threshold. Meanwhile, he touched first in the 500 free in 4:39.71 on the third day for another B-cut effort.
