<\/p>\nUniversity of California freshman Anthony Ervin shocked the field and set a world record in the 50 meter freestyle at the men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
\n\tThe former mark, 21.28, had been set less than 30 minutes earlier by Arizona's Roland Schoeman, a South African, leading off the 200m freestyle relay in 21.28.
\n\tIn the final, Schoeman took a small lead at the start and held it until the final lunge for the wall, when it was Ervin who hit the pads first, with Schoeman a mere hundredth of a second back at 21.22.
\n\tGreg Busse, of Auburn, was third in 21.49–under the American mark of 21.56 when this meet began–followed by Cal's Bart Kizierowski at 21.50. Rounding up the top eight: Matt Busbee, Auburn (21.64); Matt Macedo, Cal (21.66); Aaron Ciarla, Auburn, the defending champion, 21.75; and Texas' Bryan Jones, 22.00.
\n\tAuburn's Oswaldo Quevedo won the consolation finals in 21.96.<\/p>\n
