HARRISONBURG, Virginia, January 9. STUDENT representatives from the Coalition to Save JMU Sports will present the James Madison University Board of Visitors with evidence that the recent decision to eliminate 10 athletics programs (including men's swimming) was based on flawed information and date. The meeting will take place on Friday, Jan. 12.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Coalition will ask the Board of Visitors to let the student-athletes from the 10 teams complete their eligibility through 2010. They will also ask the board to establish an Athletics Task Force to study alternatives to the cuts. <\/p>\n
The Board of Visitors meeting will be held at 1 p.m., at the Leeolou Alumni Center on the campus of James Madison University. The Coalition to Save JMU Sports will also hold a rally outside of the Leeolou Alumni Center at Noon. <\/p>\n
On September 29, 2006, the JMU Board of Visitors voted in a closed door meeting to cut 10 athletic programs from the university (7 men's\/3 women's) effective July 1, 2007. The main reason the JMU Board of Visitors provided for the athletic program cuts was to bring JMU into compliance with Title IX. Ironically, the law that was passed to afford women athletes equal opportunity is now being turned around and used against three women's athletic teams at James Madison University.<\/p>\n
The Coalition To Save JMU Sports is made up of athletes, students, alumni, parents and fans have asked JMU to reconsider the decision to eliminate the 10 athletic programs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
