TEMPE, Arizona, January 7. THE No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated No. 21-ranked Arizona State 164-136 and lost to California, who is tied as the third-ranked team in the nation, 173-127 Saturday (Jan. 6) at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz. The meet was held in short-course yards.<\/p>\n
Freshman Scott Spann (Austin, Texas\/Westlake) led the way for the Wolverines, capturing two victories on the day. Spann's first win came in the 100-yard breaststroke, where he was able to clock a time of 55.81, less than a second off of the NCAA Consideration 'B' Time of 55.20. Spann was also able to place first in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:01.17, also less than a second off the NCAA 'B' Time for that event, which is 2:00.80. Junior Grant Burtch (Holland, Mich.\/Holland) was the next Wolverine to finish in both of those events, finishing third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.49) and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.83).<\/p>\n
Sophomore Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C.\/Butler) captured a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle, locking a time of 9:08.73. Junior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.\/Adams) took third (9:24.59) and sophomore Christian Sprang (Sicklerville, N.J.\/St. Augustine) placed fourth (9:27.10) in the event.<\/p>\n
Vanderkaay also had strong performances in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard individual medley, where he was able to capture second place in both events. In the 200-yard butterfly, he touched the wall in 1:49.30, just 0.38 seconds behind event-winner Patrick O'Neal of California. Sophomore Curtis Dauw (St. Charles, Ill.\/St. Charles East) was right behind Vanderkaay in the 200-yard butterfly, taking third with a time of 1:50.96. <\/p>\n
In the 400-yard individual medley, Vanderkaay clocked a time of 3:56.39, just ahead of freshman Andr\u00e9 Schultz (Sao Paulo, Brazil\/Colegio Palmares), who took third (3:57.13), and junior Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del.\/Salesianum), who placed fourth (3:57.48). Earlier in the meet, Schultz was able to take second in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:48.48.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines were also strong in the 500-yard freestyle, where they were led by freshman Charlie Houchin (Raleigh, N.C.\/Willam G. Enloe), who placed second in the event with a time of 4:27.20. Patton was less than a second behind, finishing third with a time of 4:27.53. <\/p>\n
Two Michigan Divers were able to place fourth in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Senior Jon Donadee (Canfield, Ohio\/Canfield) took fourth in the one-meter dive, finishing with a mark of 266.70, while sophomore Kyle Schroeder (Milan, Mich.\/Milan) placed fourth in the three-meter dive, scoring 304.58.<\/p>\n
