MELBOURNE, Australia, January 5. IN the second day of swimming at the 2007 Victorian Long Course Championships held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center, Danni Miatke, Sarah Katsoulis, Daniel Blackborrow, Sam Ashby, Jason Cohen and Nick Cordner won their respective events.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Brittany Mathie, Tarryn McGaw, Sam Bramham and Daniel Bell shined in the multi-disability events.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 Backstroke<\/b>
\nDanni Miatke posted a personal-best time of 1:02.88 to win the 100 back after leading Kelly Stubbins by just .07 seconds at the halfway mark. Stubbins wound up with a second-place time of 1:03.06 while 15-year-old Grace Loh placed third in 1:04.61.<\/p>\n
Women's 50 Breaststroke<\/b>
\nSarah Katsoulis cruised in with the only sub-32 second performance of the event with a gold-winning time of 31.96. 13-year-old Maya Hamano of Japan touched second in 33.28, while Chelsea Carpenter pocketed bronze in 33.72.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 Backstroke<\/b>
\nWith Olympian Matt Welsh excusing himself from the final heat, Daniel Blackborrow took advantage with a first-place 57.20. Blackborrow pushed out to nearly a second lead at the 50-meter mark before claiming a 1.09 second win over second-place Ryan Nolan (58.29). 17-year-old Thanasi Solomidis rounded out the podium in 58.56.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 Breaststroke<\/b>
\nSam Ashby hit the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.14, while 14-year-old Ryosuke Goto of Japan grabbed silver in 1:06.12. 17-year-old Tom Wood picked up third in 1:06.44. During the race, Ashby split a 29.99 at the 50-meter mark to push the pace and end up with the win.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 Butterfly<\/b>
\nJason Cohen captured gold in 54.17, while Nick Cordner took second in 55.40. Sam Ashby earned his second medal of the day with a bronze-winning time of 55.94. No one even came close to Cohen throughout the race as he posted a 24.80 split in the first half to take a nearly two-second lead.<\/p>\n
Men's 400 IM<\/b>
\nNick Cordner dominated the 400 IM for his second medal of the day with a time of 4:33.82. 15-year-old Trent Kennedy provided his closest competitor with a second-place time of 4:43.38, while 16-year-old Matthew Lyons placed third in 4:45.31. Cordner jumped out to more than a five-second advantage through the first half of the race with a 2:09.28 split. <\/p>\n
Multi-Disability Events<\/b>
\n15-year-old Brittany Mathie won the women's 100 breast in 1:33.12, while 17-year-old Tarryn McGaw continued her outstanding meet with a win in the women's 50 fly (34.86).
