{"id":131202,"date":"2015-04-16T12:47:26","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T19:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=131202"},"modified":"2015-04-16T12:48:03","modified_gmt":"2015-04-16T19:48:03","slug":"myles-brown-continues-hot-streak-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/myles-brown-continues-hot-streak-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Myles Brown Continues Hot Streak in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Evan Dulaney<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Myles Brown, <a title=\"Myles Brown Downs 16-Year-Old Ryk Neethling Record in South Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/myles-brown-downs-16-year-old-ryk-neethling-record-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\">who already lowered a long-standing South African record in the 400-meter free earlier this week<\/a>, remained on a roll at the South African Nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Although tonight didn&#8217;t start off the best for Brown as Clayton Jimmie touched him out in the men&#8217;s 100-meter semis, 50.81 to 50.86, Brown responded well in the 800-meter free.<\/p>\n<p>Brown returned with a dominant performance in the men\u2019s 800-meter freestyle finals. His 7:53.97 placed him just outside the top 10\u00a0in the world rankings. Brown\u2019s remarkably consistent splitting carried him to a sizable win ahead of\u00a0second-place finisher Matthew Meyer, who swam an 8:03.88. Brent Szurdoki took third in 8:12.90.<\/p>\n<p>Gerhard Zandberg, 31, led the men\u2019s 50-meter back semifinal with\u00a0a blistering 25.38, which placed him 23rd in the world rankings. Ricky Ellis\u00a0(26.03) edged Michael Andrew\u00a0(26.09) to round out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>Rene Warnes crushed the women\u2019s 200-meter fly semifinals, coasting to the top seed with a 2:14.69. Leam Strydom\u2019s 2:20.80 and Tarryn Els\u2019s 2:20.94 placed them second and third, respectively, heading into finals.<\/p>\n<p>Tara Nicholas held on to her top spot to win the women\u2019s 50-meter breast finals, posting a 32.04. 100-meter breast champion Tatjana Schoenmaker finished second with a 32.45. Franko Jonker swam a 32.55 to get third.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, breaststroke specialist Cameron van der Burgh took the crown in the men\u2019s 50-meter breast finals, busting out a 27.20. Giulio Zorzi took second in 27.73, and Marko Visser settled for third in 28.08. Van der Burgh&#8217;s 27.20 just missed his third-ranked season best of 27.17 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup.<\/p>\n<p>After a semifinals time of 1:59.32 in the women\u2019s 200-meter free, Karin Prinsloo was unable to crack the two-minute barrier in\u00a0finals. Nonetheless, her 2:00.30 was more than enough to outlast Marlies Ross\u2019s 2:02.92 and Kirsty McLauchlan\u2019s 2:04.68.<\/p>\n<p>Prinsloo also grabbed the top spot in the semifinals of the women\u2019s 200-meter backstroke in 2:16.76. Nathania Van Niekerk was not far behind. She heads into finals as the second seed with a 2:17.28. Marc\u00e9 Loubser clocked a third-seeded 2:18.52.<\/p>\n<p>Chad le Clos bounced back from qualifying\u00a0second in semis of the 200-meter fly to win finals with a 1:56.13. Sebastian Rousseau came in second, swimming a 1:57.20. Michael Meyer placed third in 1:59.52.<\/p>\n<p>Le Clos, the South African star, took the top spot in the men\u2019s 200-meter IM semifinals as well with a 2:00.35.
