IN the fourth day of swimming at the KZN Provincial Swimming Championships and Swimming South Africa World Championships Trials, Lyndon Ferns chopped almost a half-second off his African record in the 100 fly.  Ferns stopped the clock in 52.30 to eclipse the 52.59 previously set on July 13, 2006.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 Backstroke<\/b><br \/>\n17-year-old Karin Prinsloo edged fellow Tuks 17-year-old Chanelle Van Wyk in the 50 back, 30.02 to 30.03, while 15-year-old Daniella Lushington placed third in 31.08.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 Backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nAfrican record holder Gerhard Zandberg won the sprint back in 25.52, a full second ahead of second-place finisher 17-year-old Garth Tune&#39;s 26.52.  17-year-old Graeme Moore finished third in 26.70.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nThe African record holder in the event, Mandy Loots held off a hard-charging 17-year-old Keri Shaw, 1:00.31 to 1:00.46, to claim the title.  Meanwhile, Lize-Mari Retief took third in 1:00.50.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nLyndon Ferns knocked nearly a half-second off his African record in the 100 fly by touching in 52.30 for the easy victory.  Ferns stopped the clock in 52.30 to eclipse the 52.59 previously set on July 13, 2006.  In other action, Fouche Venter took second in 55.15, while David van der Bijl finished third in 56.21.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nSuzaan van Biljon put together a triumphant swim in the 200 IM to clock a 2:17.80.  That time beat 15-year-old Jessica Pengelly&#39;s second-place effort of 2:18.26.  Kathryn Meaklim wound up third in 2:18.51.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nDarian Townsend cruised into a 200 IM win by touching in 2:02.74.  17-year-old Riaan Schoeman finished well behind in 2:06.06 to touch out Byron Fergusson&#39;s 2:06.07 for second place.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 1500 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nWendy Trott remained the distance queen with another endurance win in 16:55.10.  Karlien Van Heerden placed second in 17:06.66, while Shrone Austin took third in 17:13.69.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 1500 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nTroyden Prinsloo easily won the metric mile in 15:14.19, while John Ellis edged Mark Randall, 15:45.25 to 15:45.53, for second place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jason Marsteller DURBAN, South Africa, December 16.
