THE second day of competition at the Italian Swimming Championships held in Livorno, Italy on Dec. 15, provided several thrilling finishes as most of the top swims came down to mere hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n<p><b>Morning Session<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Men&#39;s 50 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nMattia Nalesso took gold in 24.35, while Matteo Salomoni placed second in 24.67.  Rudy Goldin finished third in 24.71.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 Backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nElena Gemo came up .01 second shy of setting the Italian record in teh 50 back with a 29.19.  That effort nearly eclipsed the 29.18 Gemo set on March 27, 2006.  Federica Voto placed second in 29.95, while Roberta Serrapede took third in 30.16.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nAlessio Boggiatto claimed the 200 IM crown in 2:01.86, while Federico Turrini placed second in 2:02.45.  Leonardo Tumiotto finished third in 2:02.80.<\/p>\n<p><b>Womens 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nAlessia Filippi won the 400 IM in 4:42.97, while Veronica Massari took second in 4:52.21.  Elisa Pasini snared third in 4:54.05.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 Breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAlessandro Terrin touched first in the sprint breast with a time of 27.91, while Mattia Pesce placed second in 28.27.  Marco Sommaripa finished third in 28.50.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nCristina Chiuso raced to first in the sprint free in 25.54.  Roberta Panara picked up second in 26.47, while Marialaura Simonetto took third just behind in 26.49.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nFederico Colbertaldo took another freestyle crown, this time touching in 3:51.46 in the 400 free.  Nicola Cassio placed second in 3:52.44, while Andrea Giavi finished third in 3:55.14.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 1500 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nAlessica Paolini won the metric mile event in 17:00.87, while Irene de Biasi finished second in 17:04.27.  Elisa Pasini rounded out the top three in 17:08.85.<\/p>\n<p><b>Afternoon Session<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Men&#39;s 100 Backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nDamiano Lestingi picked up gold in the 100 back by touching out Enrico Catalano at the wall, 55.75 to 55.76, in an exciting race that came down to the wire.  Mattia Aversa picked up bronze in 55.80.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nIn another close race, Elena Gemo beat Ambra Migliori by .17 seconds to win the 100 fly event.  Gemo clocked a 59.49, while Migliori hit the wall in 59.66 for second.  Caterina Giacchetti took third in 1:00.13.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nMichele Cosentino grabbed gold in the 200 fly by stopping the clock in 1:59.67.  Francesco Vespe placed second in 2:00.29, while Paolo Villa finished third in 2:00.40.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 Breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nMichele Vancini nipped Luca Pizzini for the 200 breast title by .04 seconds as the Italian Championships continued to provide close battles.  Vancini took first in 2:14.42, while Pizzini finished second in 2:14.46.  Right behind them, Loris Facci finished third in 2:14.85 for bronze.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 Breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nIn the second straight title decided by .04 seconds, Roberta Panara pocketed gold in 1:09.60, while Veronica Demozzi settled for silver in 1:09.64.  Chiara Boggiatto finished third in 1:09.71.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nItalian record holder Filippo Magnini came from behind to win the 100 free in 48.88, while Christian Galenda couldn&#39;t hold on to a .38 second lead at the turn to place second in 49.18.  Massimiliano Rosolino finished third in 49.98.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 Freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nThe national record holder in the event, Federica Pellegrini won the 200 free by more than a second with a time of 1:58.38.
