HONOLULU, Hawaii, December 14. DURING the fifth entry of her "A Day in the Life" series, Northwestern junior Andrea Hupman continues to enjoy a Hawaiian paradise. First, she explains the main difference for her between club and college training. She then writes about the fun times had by the Wildcats during a rare afternoon off.<\/p>\n
Wednesday, December 14, Day 5<\/b>
\nAloha! <\/p>\n
We started off our day with an abs workout and a good lactate set. One major difference I've found between club swimming (or my club at least) and college swimming is the amount of quality work with a lot of rest. Our main set was 6×100 @ 6:00, which doesn't sound all that bad. There's plenty of rest, after all. But every 100 is as fast as you can possibly go. You build up some lactic acid and get used to the feeling of it. So, the set is challenging but is also a lot of fun. You get to watch your teammates swim and cheer each other on. Everyone felt pretty good after the set was over, both because we'd accomplished something and because we had the rest of the day to enjoy ourselves.<\/p>\n
We drove through some gorgeous scenery to get to Macapu'u Beach. Cliffs and rocks overlooked the deep blue ocean. Needless to say, my camera-happy teammates and I took lots of pictures. A few of my teammates had a contest for the "Most Awkward Picture." There were a lot of winners. The beach itself was great, too. The waves were huge! And, sand got everywhere! Our trainer took out the ukulele he bought and played it on the beach. Everyone was all smiles until it was time to leave; then there was another camera rush while everyone took one or two or five or six last pictures. <\/p>\n
For dinner, we had a team barbeque at the hotel pool. We went to the grocery store on the way home from the beach. Every group of roommates was in charge of bringing a dish to share. Coach Jimmy Tierney and our head diving coach Alik Sarkisian manned the grills that are on the sun deck. We got to sit around and talk and eat, some of our favorite things! <\/p>\n
