IN the second day of competition at the New Zealand World Championships Trials held in Auckland, local swimmer Mark Herring broke the 50 free national record during semis with a time of 23.19.  Here is the rest of the night&#39;s action.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 Backstroke Finals<\/b><br \/>\nNorth Shore continued its dominant meet with another 1-2 finish in the men&#39;s 100 back. Cameron Gibson touched first in 56.65, while John Zulch claimed second in 58.39.  16-year-old Kurt Bassett rounded out the top three in 58.41.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 Butterfly Finals<\/b><br \/>\nJust three weeks after emigrating from Zimbabwe to New Zealand, 17-year-old Samantha Richter took home the national title in the sprint fly with a 28.68 clocking.  15-year-old Grace Marriner-Duncan placed second in 28.85, while Emma Banks of North Shore took third in 29.08.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 Breaststroke Finals<\/b><br \/>\nFormer world record holder Zoe Baker qualified for World Championships by taking the sprint breast event in 31.48.  17-year-old Annabelle Carey of AquaGym earned silver in 32.72, while West Auckland Aquatics&#39; Sarah Vettoretti placed third in 33.50.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 Butterfly Finals<\/b><br \/>\nNorth Shore&#39;s Moss Burmester led his team&#39;s top-two sweep as the Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in the event won with a 53.62 clocking.  Teammate Corney Swanepoel finished second in 54.49, while Primo Sundevils&#39; Matt Thomas finished third in 55.78.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 Backstroke Finals<\/b><br \/>\nNorth Shore cleaned house in the women&#39;s 100 back.  Elizabeth Coster (1:02.05) upset Hannah McLean (1:02.35), while Melissa Ingram rounded out the top three in 1:03.60.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 800 Freestyle Finals<\/b><br \/>\nKiwi West Aquatics 16-year-old Cara Baker shattered her own national age group record by more than six seconds with a winning time of 8:51.70.  Spirit of the Southland&#39;s Joyce Wiegersma placed second in 9:05.48, while Capital Swim&#39;s Kirsten Cameron completed the top three in 9:13.47.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 Breaststroke Semi-Finals<\/b><br \/>\nNorth Shore&#39;s Glenn Snyders beat his teammate Oliver Young in the sprint breast semi-final by recording a 29.19 against Young&#39;s 29.94.  Meanwhile, 16-year-old Amini Fonua clocked the third-best time of 30.28.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 Freestyle Semi-Finals<\/b><br \/>\nNorth Shore snared another 1-2-3 as Alison Fitch touch in 56.99, while Helen Norfolk placed second in 58.15.  Calle Durham came in with the third-quickest time of 58.27.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 Freestyle Semi-Finals<\/b><br \/>\nWest Auckland Aquatics&#39; Mark Herring posted the fastest time of the semi-final round with a 23.19 to beat out Laser Mt. Eden Swimming 16-year-old Orinoco Faamausili-Banse&#39;s time of 23.29.
