THE final night of the Australian World Championship Trials featured a bang of an ending as Jennifer Reilly established a national record in the 400-meter individual medley. Meanwhile, Grant Hackett hung on to win his signature race, the 1,500-meter freestyle. Here's a rundown of the last night of action.<\/p>\n
Veteran Matt Welsh won the 52nd national title of his career and his ninth in the one-lap backstroke behind a time of 25.48. Welsh, the Aussie-record holder, had no trouble defeating Ashley Delaney, who placed second in 25.83. Daniel Arnamnart was third in 25.98.<\/p>\n Women's 50 Breaststroke Final<\/b><\/p>\n The incomparable Leisel Jones completed her trifecta in the breaststroke events by winning the sprint in 30.60. Already the victor in the 100 and 200 breast events, Jones knocked off world-record holder Jade Edmistone for her latest triumph. Edmistone was second in 31.01 and Tarnee White took the bronze medal with an effort of 31.29.<\/p>\n Men's 400 Individual Medley Final<\/b><\/p>\n The time was not high-quality, but Adam Lucas managed to prevail in the 400 I.M. with a swim of 4:18.68, more than three seconds slower than the Aussie record. Lucas, however, enjoyed a three-plus second margin over silver medalist Travis Nederpelt (4:22.07). Leith Brodie was third with a performance of 4:22.80.<\/p>\n Women's 50 Freestyle Final<\/b><\/p>\n The sprint queen of Australia was at it again, taking the one-lap free event in commanding fashion. Adding to her gold in the 100 free, Libby Lenton blazed to a time of 24.63 to handily better the 25.01 mark of Jodie Henry and the 25.02 of Alice Mills. Cate Campbell, a 14-year-old, pulled into the fourth position with a swim of 25.14.<\/p>\n Men's 1,500 Freestyle Final<\/b><\/p>\n The world-record holder, Grant Hackett took a stroll by his measure in winning the metric mile for the 10th time. Hackett, who was off his game earlier in the competition, was pushed by Craig Stevens for the early portion of the race, but pulled away down the stretch. Hackett clocked in at 14:56.00, with Stevens touching the wall in 15:00.59.<\/p>\n Women's 400 Individual Medley Final<\/b><\/p>\n One night after Eamon Sullivan set an Australian record in the 50 freestyle, Jennifer Reilly produced a national standard in the 400 I.M. Becoming the first Aussie woman to break 4:40, the 23-year-old was timed in 4:38.62, a little more than three seconds quicker than the 4:41.73 produced by Stephanie Rice. The bronze medal went to Lara Carroll in 4:46.88.<\/p>\n "I didn't see it at all (the time), I couldn't see the board for a while there and couldn't work it out but I am so happy," Reilly said. "It's a top swim. There is not much else to say I don't think."<\/p>\n Men's 400 Medley Relay<\/b><\/p>\n The West Coast foursome of Adam Lucas, Jim Piper, Garth Kates and Eamon Sullivan came through with a victory in 3:41.09.
