PHOENIX, Arizona, December 8. SWIMMING Canada launched a two-year program leading into the Beijing Olympics where athletes could train in a Center of Excellence. Pierre Lafontaine, CEO of Swimming Canada, spoke with Swimming World Radio about the purpose of the centers, their goals and leadership.<\/p>\n

Pierre stated that two centers were established early this year; one in Vancouver and the other in Montreal. The Vancouver center is coached by Tom Johnson along with Jozsef Nagy and the Montreal center is coached by Paul Bergen and Benoit Lebrun.<\/p>\n

The goal of the center is not to create another club but to create a training environment that concentrates on competing on a world level. The coaching staff is an extension of the club coach who produced the athlete in addition to being mentors to the young Canadian swim coaches around the country.<\/p>\n
