We’re used to seeing Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte battling in the pool for the right to call themselves the best in one of the most thrilling rivalries in swimming history. The two are at it again, though it won’t be up to them who decides the winner of this latest contest.<\/p>\n

Phelps and Lochte are the two finalists in the Beijing Bracket of USA Swimming’s SwimShowdown, which is aiming to determine the best male and female American swimmers in history. Phelps and Lochte survived the first two rounds of voting to get to this point, and the one who gets the most votes from fans will advance to the “Final Four.” Phelps and Lochte have amassed plenty of accolades in their respective careers, but in this type of contest, the number of medals won might be weighed equally to the fans’ perceptions of each athlete away from the pool.<\/p>\n

Also looking to advance to the semifinals on the men’s side are Mark Spitz and Matt Biondi, both of whom are battling for the win in the Munich Bracket. Both athletes have achieved legendary status, with Spitz becoming the first to win seven gold medals in one Olympics, and Biondi nearly eclipsing that at the 1988 Games. Could we see Spitz and Phelps go head to head for the right to call themselves the best male American swimmer in history — at least from the fans’ perspectives? Or will it be Lochte versus Spitz? Perhaps we’ll see Biondi going up against Phelps, or Lochte and Biondi pulling off an upset of sorts.<\/p>\n

On the women’s side, the voting has come down to Tracy Caulkins vs. Missy Franklin in the Los Angeles Bracket, while Janet Evans and Katie Ledecky — inarguably the two best distance swimmers in history — are dueling in the Seoul Bracket.<\/p>\n
