Todd Torres completed a breaststroke trifecta at the North Carolina Masters short course yards championships, setting U.S. Masters Swimming national records in the 50 and 200 breaststrokes to go along with the one he set last month in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n
Torres, 46, started off with a 26.17 in the 50 breast on Saturday, faster than the 26.58 that Wally Dicks put up in 2008 for the previous record in the 45-49 age group. Next was the 200 breast later in the day, and Torres\u2019 2:08.23 just barely beat David Guthrie\u2019s six-year-old record of 2:08.33.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Torres only had the 100 breaststroke, but could not beat his own national record of 56.83 with a 57.45.<\/p>\n
Torres also teamed with Erika Braun, Kerry Lindauer and Van Fletcher to chase the national record in the mixed 200 medley relay for the 35-plus age group that has stood at 1:39.85 since 2010 by Colorado Masters. The North Carolina foursome fell short of the record, though, with a 1:40.34.<\/p>\n
Torres competed in two Olympics representing Puerto Rico, placing 16th in the 100 breast in 1992 and 21st in 1996. He was also a silver medalist at the 1991 Pan American Games in the 100 breast and an All-American at Louisiana State University. His 53.67 from 1991 still ranks second-best all-time in the LSU record books, and he was the school\u2019s first NCAA swimming champion, winning the 100 breast in 1987.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
