Many of the past winners of this week\u2019s USA Swimming sectionals in Buffalo won another event tonight, with a few of the winners notching Olympic Trials cuts in the long course competition.<\/p>\n
Mary Smith of the PACK Swim Team of Pittsford broke 26 seconds for the first time in winning the 50 freestyle with a 25.97. That got the 16-year-old a place at the Olympic Trials in the event, beating the standard of 26.19 and eclipsing her lifetime best of 26.35 from 2013. Making improvements as well in second place was another 16-year-old, Emily Zimcosky, who was second with a 26.32 to just miss the Trials cut.<\/p>\n
The top two finishers in the men\u2019s 100 backstroke will get to swim in Omaha as well. Dylan Sali dropped a couple of tenths off his lifetime best to win with a 55.78, while Ryan Dudzinski of Upper St. Clair was second with a 57.12, beating the Trials cut of 57.19.<\/p>\n
Drew Modrov was already set to participate in the 50 free at the Olympic Trials, thanks to a 22.97 from December. Modrov almost beat that with a 23.00 to win tonight by three tenths over the 23.39 by Benjamin Nadareski.<\/p>\n
Hannah Cox picked up her third win of the meet with a 4:15.95 in the 400 freestyle, dropping her lifetime best by nearly two seconds. She wasn\u2019t challenged, winning by almost three seconds over Pitt\u2019s Amanda Richey, who was second with a 4:18.35.<\/p>\n
The 200 butterfly finals featured close races for first place. In the women\u2019s event, Caroline Heilbrun of the FISH led the field with a 1:04.74 at 100 meters. Six tenths back was Bryanna Cameron of Solo Stars with a 1:05.37. Cameron made her move on the third 50 and took over to win with a 2:16.65 to Heilbrun\u2019s 2:16.79.<\/p>\n
The same strategy took place in the men\u2019s 200 fly, where Jonathan Gomez of Scarlet led at the halfway point with a 59.84. A second behind was Jarret Jones, the winner of the 400 IM. Gomez still held on to the lead at the 150, but Jones turned on the afterburners to win with a 2:04.25, just three hundredths of a second ahead of Gomez.<\/p>\n
Also winning a second event was Kinga Cichowska of the University of Pittsburgh, who swept the breaststroke events with a 2:33.01 in the 200 tonight. <\/p>\n
Taking the men\u2019s 200 breast was Garrett Clarke with a 2:21.33, a full three seconds ahead of the competition. Blair Wegescheide of Pitt took the women\u2019s 100 back with a 1:03.73, while Fynn Minuth of Upper St. Clair took the 400 free with a 4:06.08, leaving Jack McIntyre of Eastern Express and Jarrett Jones to fight for second. McIntyre was second with a 4:07.52 while Jones took third with a 4:07.94.<\/p>\n
