ATLANTA, Georgia, December 5. AMANDA Weir, who set an American record in the 100 freestyle at last summer's U.S. Nationals, has opted to bypass the remainder of her collegiate swimming career at the University of Southern California. Weir recently turned professional and has signed with agent Evan Morgenstein of the Premier Management Group.<\/p>\n
A 2004 Olympian, Weir has emerged as one of the world's top sprinters and will spend the next four months preparing for the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne. There, Weir is expected to battle Australia's Libby Lenton, Germany's Britta Steffen and American Natalie Coughlin for top honors in the 100 free. <\/p>\n
Originally starting college at the University of Georgia, Weir decided to transfer after the 2005 season and sat out last year at the NCAA level. She began this year at USC, under the direction of coach Dave Salo, but was lured by the chance to turn professional, particularly at a time when her stock is hot. At the Athens Olympics, Weir earned a pair of silver medals in relay action.<\/p>\n
