State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BLACKSBURG, Virginia, December 2. THE Virginia Tech men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming and diving teams defeated both UNC Wilmington and N.C. State, Saturday, in the War Memorial Pool. The women defeated NC State 201.50-96.50, while they won over UNCW 210-88. For the men, Tech took NC State 170-130, and UNCW 231-62. The women recorded 14 individual event wins throughout the meet, while the men had eight.<\/p>\n<p>The Tech women opened the meet by taking first and third in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Katie Suhr, Jessica Botzum, Becky Horning and Courtney Walsh each combined for the top spot in the event, clocking a time of 1:45.60. Just seconds behind was the second Tech relay squad, touching the wall in 1:48.17, for the third-place finish.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Jones had a finish in the Top 3 for Tech in the 1,000-yard freestyle. She stopped the clock at 10:22.73 for the third-place spot. Beth Byrum rounded out the Top 5, finishing in 10:29.25.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Smith won her first event in the 200-yard freestyle. She notched a time of 1:50.97 for the top spot. Allison Luttermoser (1:53.80) and Kelly deMarrais (1:54.09) took third and fourth, respectively in the event, while Megan Newell was sixth in 1:55.94.<\/p>\n<p>The women swept the Top 3 spots in the 100-yard backstroke. Suhr finished first with a time of 58.15. Jordan McHorney was just behind with a time of 59.54. Sarah Ameen claimed third place by clocking in a time of 59.59. Claire Dickey rounded out the Top 5 in 59.74.<\/p>\n<p>The H2Okies had three swimmers in the Top 5 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Millie Campbell earned medalist honors, finishing two seconds faster than any other competitor. Her final time was recorded at 1:05.32. Jessica Earl was No. 3 in the event, finishing in 1:08.28. Finally, Morgan Kowalchuk was fifth in 1:08.64.<\/p>\n<p>Botzum&#39;s time of 2:06.17 earned her the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly. Julie Sablik and Abby Barney finished right after their teammate, for second and third in the event. Sablik finished in 2:07.92, while Barney&#39;s time was recorded at 2:08.25. Horning made it four Hokies in the Top 5, finishing in 2:08.87. Walsh and McHorney were second and fourth, respectively, for the Hokies in the 50-yard freestyle. Walsh&#39;s time of 24.26 earned her second, while McHorney clocked in at 24.46.<\/p>\n<p>Smith&#39;s second win came in a pool-record setting way. She finished the 100-yard freestyle in 50.48, breaking the previous record of 50.58. The time also qualified as an NCAA &quot;B&quot; cut time. Luttermoser and Walsh finished fourth and fifth in the same event, in times of 53.13 and 53.56, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>It was another Top 3 sweep for the Hokies in the 200-yard backstroke. deMarrais stopped the clock at 2:02.14 for first place. Sara Shapiro and Ameen were second and third, with Shapiro finishing at 2:07.56 and Ameen clocking in at 2:07.99.<\/p>\n<p>Botzum had first again in the 200-yard breaststroke. She clocked in the winning time of 2:18.54. Earl took fifth in the same event with a time of 2:28.73. Jones was the fastest of all competitors in the 500-yard freestyle. She took top honors with a time of 5:02.15. Byrum was two spots behind her teammate, finishing third in 5:08.86.<\/p>\n<p>Smith made it three in the 100-yard butterfly. She took medalist honors in a time of 56.20. Horning (57.61), Newell (57.75) and Barney (58.34) took fourth thru sixth in the same event.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell and Luttermoser finished in first and second place in the 200-yard individual medley. Campbell clocked in the top time of 2:06.51, while Luttermoser finished in 2:09.29. In the diving well, Lara Beth Elder took first on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. On the 1-meter, she finished with a score of 277.95. On the 3-meter her top score was 293.40.<\/p>\n<p>The women wrapped up the meet with a first place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Botzum, Walsh, McHorney and Smith combined for the finish in 3:31.60.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#39;s 200-yard medley relay, Tech earned the top spot after a finish that went down to the wire. Tech&#39;s squad of Gus Calado, Jake Bova, Scott Beard and Kaan Tayla out-reached the NC State relay team for a first-place finish of 1:32.00. NC State was under a minute behind with a time of 1:32.83.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Griffin Lutterbein and Calado finished in tandem in the second and third spots. Lutterbein finished with a time of 9:36.14, while Calado finished in 9:39.42. Ben Miller took fifth in 6:56.60.<\/p>\n<p>The men had three swimmers finish in the fastest five in the 200-yard freestyle. Zac Czaplicki had top honors in a time of 1:41.00, while John Riley and Neil Savage were in fourth and fifth, respectively. Riley recorded a time of 1:43.24, while Savage finished in 1:43.25.<\/p>\n<p>The Hokies claimed second thru fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. Scott Beard led the trio, finishing in 50.10. Kevin Koehr and Ben Prue finished with 52.75 and 52.95, respectively, after Beard.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Huss was the fastest Tech finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke. He led a trio of Hokies that finished 3-4-5. Andy Pelenberg was fourth with 59.84, while Savage took fifth in a time of 1:00.20. Huss&#39;s third-place time was recorded at 59.56.<\/p>\n<p>Calado led the way, as four Hokies placed in the Top 5 of the 200-yard butterfly. Calado&#39;s winning time went down at 1:50.58. Czaplicki, Mike Lewis and Stephen Jensen then took 3-5 in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Tayla&#39;s time of 20.70 in the 50-yard freestyle earned him medalist honors. Ian deToll took third in the event with a time of 20.96, and Bova was fifth with 21.20.<\/p>\n<p>Tech swept the Top 3 spots in the 100-yard freestyle. It was deToll who earned the top spot, stopping the clock at 46.42, while Tayla was just behind in 46.58. Pete Cancila wrapped up the trio in 46.97. <\/p>\n<p>Calado, Koehr and Prue took second, third and fourth, respectively in the 200-yard backstroke. Calado&#39;s time was recorded at 1:51.67. NC State&#39;s Stephen Mellor broke a pool record in the event, finishing in 1:48.97. The previous record was 1:49.28.<\/p>\n<p>Savage and Huss combined for a 2-3 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Savage&#39;s touched the wall in 2:10.97, while Huss finished in 2:11.61. Jensen finished fifth, while Andy Pelenberg took sixth. Lutterbein had the highest finish for the Hokies in the 500-yard freestyle. He clocked in a time of 4:44.02 for fourth place. <\/p>\n<p>The H2Okies had four Top 5 finishes in the 100-yard butterfly. Beard and deToll went 1-2, finishing in times of 49.26 and 50.40, respectively. Lewis and Cancila were fourth and fifth in the same event. In the 200-yard individual medley, Jensen finished third in the event. He clocked in a time of 1:57.18. Beard finished fourth in 1:57.84, while Savage was fifth in 1:58.61.<\/p>\n<p>Mikey McDonald took a first-place finish and second-place finish in the 1- and 3-meter springboards, respectively. On the 3-meter, his score maxed out at 361.45. On the 1-meter, his second-place score was recorded at 336.45. Chris Waldheim was one spot behind his teammate, finishing with a score of 305.05.<\/p>\n<p>The 400-yard freestyle relay team finished the meet with a first-place finish.
