Maybe no one knows except FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu. \u00a0Or he might share that information with his 80 plus year old President. Or he might not.<\/p>\n<p>But I do know this. \u00a0Once every four years, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) gives FINA 45 MILLION DOLLARS. \u00a0The IOC does that because FINA is one of the top three federations in terms of television views at the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>WHY do those public folk watch the Olympic Games? \u00a0Is it to see Cornel Marculescu and his Bureau sitting on their Thrones? \u00a0I think not. \u00a0This will come as a surprise to the FINA Bureau, but people tune in to watch\u2026(<em>wait for it<\/em>..) THE ATHLETES!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Those Children.\u00a0 A famous quote from FINA\u2019s Executive Director, Cornel Marculescu, \u201d<em>FINA is like a family.\u00a0 We have a mother, a father and the athletes are the children, seen, but not heard<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 And yet, the FINA \u201cchildren\u201d are more like slaves.\u00a0 They bring in 45 Million dollars to the FINA Treasury (which is only a tiny portion of the total FINA budget, we would guess from figures bandied about for \u201crights\u201d to the World Championships\u2026and oh yes, remember, FINA doesn\u2019t let anyone see its REAL FINANCES), yet they receive CRUMBS in return in terms of prize money dribbled out over a four year period.\u00a0 And the coaches, well, they have never even ASKED to be included in the Royal Largesse.\u00a0 Perhaps that is their own fault, but without coaches, there is precious little elite swimming in the world. Coaches HAVE NEVER ASKED\u00a0 because there is no group less \u201cself-serving\u201d in the world of sports than swimming coaches. Some women do love a man with a Throne\u2026.especially when they also get their own.<\/em> )<\/p>\n<p><strong>You <\/strong>are the show, not the blazers who show up ten minutes after the start of the meet and leave for dinner before the last event of the evening.<\/p>\n<h2>ATHLETE CENTERED, COACH DIRECTED and Administratively Supported.<\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s the way to conduct international sport. \u00a0The exact reverse is what FINA provides now.\u00a0 Administrators are rewarded and glorified (and, enriched), athletes are a \u201cnecessary annoyance\u201d without any say and coaches having zero status in the entire organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Money earned on Athletes Backs is Money that Should Be in Athletes Pockets <\/strong>and not in the wallets of those who select to sit on Thrones.<\/p>\n<p>WE ALL DESERVE BETTER.<\/p>\n<p>John Leonard<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commentary by By John Leonard Do you know what the FINA (Federation Internationale De Natation) annual or quadrennial budget is?
