AKRON, Ohio, December 1. DAY one of the 2006 SummaCare Invitational came to end with the University of Akron swimming and diving team resting in first place with 400 points.<\/p>\n
Trailing OU, going into the final event of the night Kendall Karchner (Maumme,Ohio\/Maumme HS), Melissa Young (North Canton, Ohio\/North Canton Hoover HS), Danielle Beland (Ottawa,Ontatio\/St. Peters HS) and Cathryn Collins (Hilton Head, S.C\/Hilton Head HS) clocked in a season-best time of 3:54.54 in the 400 yard medley relay to lift the Zips into first place heading into tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Collins posted a team-best time of 5:03.75 in the 500 yard free to win the B-Finals for Akron. That collegiate best time for Collins was the second-best mark in the entire 24-swimmer field.<\/p>\n
Fellow freshmen Kylie Bombrys (Toldeo, Ohio\/Notre Dame Academy) and Katelyn Lofland (Boise, Idaho\/Home Schooled) also tallied season-best times in the 500 free to finish in fifth and eighth respectively. Bombrys surpassed her previous best by over seven seconds, clocking in at 5:08.14. Lofland exceeded her old mark by over five seconds, tapping in at 5:08.66.<\/p>\n
The tandem of Ali Allwes (Stow, Ohio\/Stow-Munroe Falls), Stephanie Zielinski (Philadelphia, Pa.\/Archbishop Ryan HS), Rachel Ripley (Greenwood, Ind.\/Center Grove HS) and (Cathryn) Collins recorded a team-best mark of 1:38.43 in the 200 free relay, finishing in seventh overall.<\/p>\n
Zielinksi bested her preliminary time in the 50 free by one-tenth of second as she tapped the wall in 24.30 to earn a fifth-place finish.<\/p>\n
Katie Carter (Euclid, Ohio\/Euclid HS) finished in second place in the 1-meter diving event with 250.65 points.<\/p>\n
Trailing the Zips is Ohio (363), UC Davis (348.5), Illinois State (344.5), Clarion (317), Duquesne (305), Buffalo (304.5), Xavier (178.5), Shippensburg (134) and Bloomsburg (122).<\/p>\n
On the men's side Eric Bugby, Ed Wicker, Mike Ley and Darwin Scott of Duquesne University teamed-up to clock in a new meet and pool record with time of 1:36.54 in the 200 free relay.<\/p>\n
Chris Kobela of Duquesne also entered the record books with a new meet and pool record in the 500 yard free with mark of 4:35.27.<\/p>\n
Michael McDowell of Buffalo also set a new meet and pool record in men's 3-meter diving as he recorded a six-dive total of 332.40.<\/p>\n
Clarion leads the men's group with 395.5 points, followed by Ohio (395), Buffalo (379.5), Xavier (352), Duquesne (334), Shippensburg (285), St. Bonaventure (246), and Bloomsburg (115).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
