MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, November 30. THE University of Minnesota recently added three swimmers to its latest signing class. Chris Peterson, Kevin Baseheart and Zach Weis each signed National Letters of Intent to attend the school.<\/p>\n
A senior at St. Charles North High School, Peterson was one of the top swimmers in the nation as a junior in the 500 freestyle. He is a multiple NISCA High School All-American and competed at the 2006 U.S. Junior Nationals in the 100, 200 and 400-meter free. His top times are 4:33.80 in the 500 free (short course yards), 1:40.07 in the 200 free and 46.91 in the 100 free. Peterson was the state runner-up in the 200 freestyle as a junior and also took second in the 500 free as a sophomore.<\/p>\n
"Any time you sign a high school champion, especially one that was a champion as a junior, you are very excited," assistant coach Bill Tramel said. "I have talked extensively with his high school coach, Rob Rooney, and we both believe that we has tremendous upside. He will have an outstanding senior season and an even better collegiate career."<\/p>\n
Peterson also competes for the St. Charles Swim Team under head coach Jon Cabel. <\/p>\n
"Kevin was the top swimmer that we were interested in out of Wisconsin," Dale said. "He really has it all. He has great size at 6-5 and is outstanding in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. He has a very bright future."<\/p>\n
A senior at Milwaukee King High School, Baseheart won the Wisconsin State title in the 100 butterfly as a junior after placing second as a sophomore. With his victory, Baseheart became the first City Conference swimmer to ever win the event at the state meet. He also placed third at the state meet in the 50 free as a junior.<\/p>\n
Baseheart owns a large resume of national competition as well. He competed in five individual events at the 2006 Speedo USA Junior Nationals, including the 100-meter butterfly where he placed ninth overall. He was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2006 National YMCA Short Course Championships where he also placed sixth in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 free.<\/p>\n
His top times are 49.79 in the 100 butterfly (short course yards), 21.14 in the 50 free and 46.07 in the 100 free.<\/p>\n
Baseheart also competes for the Schroeder YMCA under head coach Dave Anderson.<\/p>\n
"First and foremost, Zach is one of the best swimmers graduating from a Minnesota high school this year," assistant coach Bill Tramel said. "Our goal each year is to show these high school seniors they need not look elsewhere for academics or a top flight swimming program. He is a senior national level breaststroker and has a great work ethic. Zach is also an amateur boxer, which intrigued us when recruiting him. I think it shows an extra toughness that we want on our team."<\/p>\n
A senior at Cretin-Derham High School, Weis joins his brother, Adam who is currently a sophomore for the Golden Gophers. Weis had a strong summer of competition, placing fourth at the Speedo USA Junior Nationals in the 200-meter breaststroke in a time of 2:21.67. Weis finished sixth at the Minnesota State Class AA meet in the 100-yard breaststroke as a junior.<\/p>\n
His top times are 2:21.67 in the 200 breaststroke (long course meters) and 1:07.68 in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
