POUGHKEEPSIE, New York, November 28. MARIST Director of Swimming Larry J. Van Wagner has announced the signing of Maria Altieri (Hamden, Conn.\/Hamden) and Joshua Sklanka (Watertown, Conn.\/Watertown) to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Altieri will join the a women's squad who has won three straight MAAC Championships and the 2006 ECAC Championship, while Sklanka will join the men's team who has won back-to-back MAAC crowns.<\/p>\n
Altieri will come to Poughkeepsie after a successful career at Hamden High School. She has been named a team captain for her senior campaign and was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that holds the school record. She has been a Southern Connecticut Conference All-Academic Selection since 2003 and has also been an All-Quinnipiac Division honoree (2003-2006) and an All Conference Selection (2005-2006). Altieri is also a Connecticut Swimming Scholar athlete as well as a Scholastic All-American honoree.<\/p>\n
Altieri also helps in the community as she is an Assistant Swim Coach with the Paradise Country Club's swim team. Her duties include working with the 12 and under age group on their strokes, turns and techniques, while teaching the age six and under group how to swim.<\/p>\n
Aside form her accomplishments in the pool, Altieri has also earned Academic High Honors every semester at Hamden, is a member of the National Honor Society and a CAPT Scholar.<\/p>\n
Sklanka will join the Foxes after being named captain of the Watertown Boy's Swimming and Diving team coached by Eric Miller and a member of the Cheshire Sea Dogs YMCA Swim Team coached by Sean Farrell.<\/p>\n
Sklanka was an All-Naugatuck Valley League selection as well as an All-State performer in his sophomore and junior seasons at Watertown High. In 2006 he was a member of the YMCA National Team that competed in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.<\/p>\n
Sklanka, an honor student, also ran cross country as a freshman and was named Rookie of the Year. He continues to compete in several local triathlons.<\/p>\n
Sklanka is also involved in the community as he volunteered with the Empire Racing Team for the Project Graduation Fundraiser. He has also worked at the Main St. Theatre and with the Special Olympics as a volunteer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
