COLUMBIA, Missouri, November 19. THE Missouri men's and women's swimming teams led from the first relay and eased past Truman State at the Mizzou Aquatic Center Saturday. The men registered a 179-78 win and the women defeated the Bulldogs 173-89.<\/p>\n
The Tiger women opened up a 28-8 lead following the 400 medley relay and 1000 free. TSU trimmed the margin to seven, at 46-39, after they claimed first and either second or third in each of the next three races.<\/p>\n
MU regained the momentum as they scored the maximum 16 points in two of the next three events and began to pull away.<\/p>\n
Jill Granger was a multiple winner for the Tigers as she captured the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley.<\/p>\n
Colleen Gordon continued her strong distance swimming as she won the 1000 free in 10:10.56, followed closely by Lori Halvorson in 10:15.21. Halvorson also scored in the 100 free, touching first in 52.58.<\/p>\n
Mizzou's 'A' and 'B' relays combined for 15 points in the 400 medley relay to start things off on the right foot for the men. Brandon Lee and Brad Hubbard went 1-2 in the 1000 free and Bennett Clark led a top four Tiger sweep in the 200 free as MU led 44-11 after the first three events.<\/p>\n
Joe Wilson followed with the first of his two backstroke wins, taking the 100 in 53.05. He later swam a season-best 1:57.13 in the 200. <\/p>\n
Clark added a second individual gold on the day, this time in the 100 butterfly where he posted the fourth-fastest time in the Big 12 Conference all season, completing the race in 49.98. He led off the 200 free relay and put the Tigers in position to win with a 20.75 split – the fastest at the distance all meet (he did not swim the 50 free race Saturday).<\/p>\n
While diving was not scored, there were a number of strong performances on both boards by MU athletes. Greg DeStephen dove a personal best 342.67 on the 1-meter and turned in the second-highest dual score in school-history on the 3-meter with a 377.10. On the women's side both Kendra Melnychuk and Kim Massaro scored season-bests with 321.52 and 284.10, respectively.<\/p>\n
