FORT WORTH, Texas, November 19. – BOTH the men’s and women’s swimming and diving team earned wins against Centenary on Saturday. The women also competed against defeated San Diego State in a tri-meet.<\/p>\n
The men (4-2, 1-2) defeated Centenary (2-4, 0-0) 68-34, while the women (8-3, 2-3) triumphed over San Diego State (5-5, 1-5) and Centenary (5-3, 0-0) 71-40 and 77-32, respectively, to give swimming and diving head coach Richard Sybesma career win No. 350.<\/p>\n
“This was a great win for our program,” said Sybesma. “Our kids swam very well. I think Centenary and San Diego State have really good programs and we were fortunate to win.”<\/p>\n
The Frogs spread the wealth around Saturday as 14 different swimmers and divers won events, including five double-event winners.<\/p>\n
On the women’s side, senior Tara Sullivan picked up her first two victories of the season. In the 200-free, Sullivan took the top spot in a time of 1:56.10, while recording a winning time of 53.77 in the 100-free.<\/p>\n
Also picking up two wins for the women was freshman diver Jennifer Ferguson. The Beaconfield, Quebec, native slated scores of 298.27 and 331.13 in the one- and three-meter dives, respectively, which are both the second-highest scores in TCU history. Ferguson improved her collegiate record to 12-0.<\/p>\n
Senior Erica Tate remained undefeated in the 50-free event, recording a time of 23.83. Tate is now 6-0 in the event on the season.<\/p>\n
Also getting in on the action for the women were Maribeth Pottenger, Cheryl Townsend and Stephanie Futscher. Pottenger won the 100-breast in a time of 1:06.26, while Cheryl Townsend earned a win in the 400-IM (4:29.42). Freshman Stephanie Futscher took the top spot in the 100-fly in a time of 58.40, securing her seventh win on the season. <\/p>\n
For the men, both Jonathon Berrettini and Stuart Silver recorded double-event days. Berrettini, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, earned wins in the 100-free (47.49) and 200-free (1:44.79), while Silver won the 1000-free and 500-free in times of 9:54.01 and 4:50.94, respectively.<\/p>\n
Other winners for the men included Scott McCracken, Yousif Del Valle, Jason Hauck, Ben Biefnes and Aran Bean. First-time winners on the season were sophomore Jason Hauck and senior Aran Bean. Hauck earned the top spot in the 100-back with a time of 54.36, while Bean took the 100-breast event in a time of 59.24.<\/p>\n
McCracken, the Mountain West Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week, recorded a win in the 50-free (21.08), with Del Valle taking the 100-fly (49.99) and Biefnes winning the 400-IM (4:09.24).<\/p>\n
In men’s diving action, sophomore R.J. Hesselberg picked up two wins and set personal bests in the process. In the one-meter dive, Hesselberg recorded a 312.66, while slated a 324.75 in the three-meter.<\/p>\n
In relay action, both the men and women went undefeated, taking all four events.<\/p>\n
