\nIn the morning prelims, Stanford qualified first with a US Open record of 4:01.76. But Georgia was less than a tenth of a second back, with Arizona, boasting two 1996 Olympic gold medallists, another second behind.
\n\tThe final saw four teams battle for the title, with Georgia\u2019s Courtney Shealey splitting 58.75 for the 100 backstroke leg, followed by Arizona\u2019s Beth Botsford at 59.04. Kristy Kowal swam second for Georgia, having split a tremendous 1:05.29 for her breaststroke leg in prelims. But she could not shake Cal\u2019s determined Stacianna Stitts. At the halfway mark, Georgia led at 2:04.84, followed by a surprising Cal (2:05.46 and Arizona (2:05.63), with Stanford back in sixth. Jocelyn Yeo gave Cal the lead as she split 58.33 for her fly leg, with Georgia a close second (3:04.12) and Arizona still in the hunt (3:04.78). It all came down to the final leg, and Georgia frosh Maritza Correia would not be denied. Anchoring her tem in 53.34, she turned and punched her fist in the air. Georgia\u2019s time\u20143:57.46\u2014was a new world record, breaking the old mark set by Japan at the Short Course World Championships in Hong Kong last April. Arizona, at 3:58.47, was under the previous American mark. Cal was third, Stanford fourth.<\/p>\n

\nLouisiana State sophomore Jamie Watkins took the 1-meter diving with 439.70 points with teammate, Ashley Culpepper third with 431.20. Favored Jenny Keim finished a close second with 434.00 point.<\/p>\n
