WELLESLEY, Massachusetts, November 16. MIT's women's swimming and diving team opened its 2006-07 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule with a thrilling 152-149 victory over Wellesley College on Wednesday night. Sophomore Nicole O'Keefe was the driving force behind Tech's triumph, as she was involved in four wins – including three individual victories – out of MIT's seven total.<\/p>\n
The Engineers' record stands at 1-0 both overall and in the NEWMAC following the meet, which was their first dual contest of the season. Earlier this month, they finished in first place out of four entries in the Batterman Relays. Wellesley falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.<\/p>\n
O'Keefe took home individual victories in the 1000-meter freestyle (11:01.56), the 200-meter breaststroke (2:23.73) and the 200-meter individual medley (2:17.68). She was also part of the triumphant 200-meter medley relay team with sophomore Jen Chao, freshman Priya Parayanthal and senior Stephanie Sidelko, which clocked in a winning time of 1:53.79.<\/p>\n
Chao had two individual wins of her own, in both the 100-meter (1:03.40) and the 200-meter backstrokes (2:19.50). Parayanthal picked up Tech's other victory, touching the wall at 1:01.47 for the first-place finish in the 100-meter fly.<\/p>\n
Wellesley was helped immensely in the standings by its impressive divers, who swept their events. Stephanie White took the 1-meter while Kate Sorenson was victorious in the 3-meter.
