THE Alaska School Activities Association Swimming and Diving Championship were held over Nov. 3-4 at the Bartlett Pool in Anchorage, Alaska. Five state records fell during a meet that witnessed Juneau Douglas High claim the women's meet and Sitka High take home the men's title.

Juneau Douglas High topped the women's meet with a dominant 140 points, while Service High placed second with 75 points and KayHi High finished third with 66 points. East High (64) and South High (49) rounded out the top five.

For the men's meet, Sitka High grabbed the team title with 85 points over second-place East High's 71 points. Juneau Douglas High took third with 68 points, while Service High placed fourth with 52 points and Dimond High finished fifth with 36 points.

Ketchikan's Laura Miller and Juneau's Kyle O'Brien took home outstanding swimmer awards, while Dimond's Megan Morton and Ketchikan's Ryan Borup garnered outstanding diver accolades.

The Juneau Douglas women's 200-yard medley relay team of Julia Dicostanzo, Lia Heifetz, Melissa Bogert and Sara Bogert opened the meet up right with a state-record time of 1:48.93. That time eclipsed the 1:49.32 previously set by Service High in 2003.

O'Brien erased an ancient, 21-year-old, record in the 200-yard free with a 1:41.17 to clear the 1:42.69 set by West Valley High's Andrew Billings in 1985.

Service High's Jennifer Rinker picked off the third record of the meet with a 58.02 in the 100-yard back. That effort surpassed the 58.40 previously clocked by Soldotna High's Abby Kiffmeyer in 2003.

KayHi High's Elizabeth Jagusch then notched the fourth state record with a 1:05.61 in the 100-yard breast. That performance edged the 11-year-old record of 1:05.74 recorded by Lathrop High's Heather King in 1995.

Additionally, according to media reports, Miller turned in a 51.17 100-yard freestyle leadoff for her 400 free relay team to notch the fifth state record of the meet. West High's Sara Rockwell previously held the record with a 51.38 in 2002.

A trio of swimmers posted individual title doubles as Miller took home the 50 free in 23.82 and the 100 free in 51.48. Meanwhile, O'Brien added the 100 free title to his 200 free crown with a 47.13.

The third swimmer to touch first in a pair of events came by way of East High's Meghan Cavanaugh. She won the 100 fly in 56.28, before hitting the wall first in the 500 free in 5:04.40.

By Jason Marsteller ANCHORAGE, Alaska, November 12.
