COLUMBUS, Ohio, November 11. THE No. 14 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team added another win to its record as the Buckeyes trounced Miami (Ohio), 165-73, Saturday in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Despite winning every event for the second consecutive day of dual-meet competition, the Buckeyes chose to swim the last two events as exhibition. The men are now 2-0 for the season. <\/p>\n
The Buckeyes opened the meet with the two fastest times in the 200-yard medley relay. RJ Lemyre (Sr., Columbus, Ohio\/Upper Arlington), Felipe Travesso (So., Belo Horizonte, Brazil\/Lawrences North), Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio\/Centerburg) and Matt Voelker (Jr., Columbus, Ohio\/Upper Arlington) were responsible for the win (1:32.60), while the team of Dan Novak (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil\/Foothill), Daniel Malnik (Fr., Rishon le-Zion, Israel\/Gan-Nahum), Chandler West (Fr., Atlanta, Ga\/Chattahochee) and Joel Elber (Fr., Brunswick, Ohio\/Brunswick) touched in next with a time of 1:34.58. <\/p>\n
The men continued the winning trend, capturing four of the top five positions in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Mark Neiman (Fr., Cherry Hill, NJ\/Cherry Hill) picked up the win in 9:17.38, with teammates Ryan Stoneburg (So., Copley, Ohio\/Akron Firestone), Alex Chen (Fr., Bowie Md\/DeMartha Catholic) and Jordan Hershberger (So., Sarasota, Fla\/Sarasota) respectively placing third, fourth and fifth. <\/p>\n
Matthias Sigrist (So., Schaffhausen, Switzerland\/Schaffhausen) earned his second-consecutive title in the 200-yard freestyle for the season when he stopped the clock first at 1:41.23. The Buckeyes swept the event, with George Markovic (Fr., Sydney, Australia\/St. Ives) taking second and Jake Busch (So., Toldeo, Ohio\/Toledo Christiansen) in third. Freestyle remained a strong suit for the team throughout the meet. Doyle won his first event of the meet in the 50-yard freestyle just ahead of Voelker. Doyle picked up his second win in the 100-yard freestyle, followed by Matthias Sigrist and Michael Kordel (So., Cleveland, Ohio\/St. Edwards). <\/p>\n
Senior Nate King (Youngstown, Ohio\/Warren Harding) led teammates in a sweep of the first four places in the 200-yard individual medley, winning in 1:54.02. Scott Blake (So., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla\/Suncoast), Andrew Olson (Fr., Allison Park, Penn\/Hampton) and Novak were responsible for the next three finishes. Chandler West (Fr., Atlanta, Ga\/Chattahoochee) captured his first collegiate win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.55). Michael Kelley (Fr., Westerville, Ohio\/Westerville North) also captured his first college dual-meet win in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.57). <\/p>\n
Ohio State also dominated in the 500-yard freestyle, going 1-3-4-5 in the event. Markovic added a second win to his young collegiate career in the race with his time of 4:38.60. The men opted not to score the last two events despite having the fastest times in both the 200-yard breaststroke and 800-yard freestyle relay. <\/p>\n
The divers continued to enjoy success on the board, sweeping the top four places for the second meet in a row. Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash\/Cascade Christian) took first on both the 1- and the 3-meter springboards for the second consecutive meet with the respective scores of 264.50 and 377.25. <\/p>\n
"It's rare to go through all of the events and win everything," Bill Wadley, head swimming coach, said. "Miami had some good swimmers. They did a good job. We could have been faster in some events, but it still only the second meet of the year. We are still working on competing at the proper speed and working on the smaller details like turns.
