But it was Stanford\u2019s display of talent in the 200 IM that highlighted the morning\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p><em>Number of total A and B finalists by school after day one prelims:<\/em><br \/>\n[table \u201c\u201d not found \/]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>500 freestyle<\/strong><br \/>\nThe morning after helping Southern California <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/southern-californias-fast-800-free-relay-highlights-opening-night-mens-pac-12-championships\/ target=_blank>dominate the 800 free relay<\/a> to open competition, sophomore Reed Malone swam the fastest 500 free of the morning with a 4:15.02. That\u2019s just five tenths off the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:14.59, but Malone should easily break that and go for his lifetime best of 4:12.66 in the final. Stanford\u2019s Danny Thomson will go into tonight\u2019s final as the second seed with a 4:15.45, while reigning NCAA champion Cristian Quintero qualified third with a 4:16.15.<\/p>\n<p>USC is running second in the points race behind California, but could take the lead after this event tonight, earning three spots in the championship final and one in the consolation final. California, however, should score well with five swimmers getting a second swim tonight.<\/p>\n<p><em>Number of A and B finalists by school for the 500 free are listed below:<\/em><\/p>\n[table \u201c\u201d not found \/]<br \/>\n\n<p><strong>200 individual medley<\/strong><br \/>\nStanford showed its cards in the 200 IM with five swimmers getting into the A final. David Nolan, the 2013 NCAA champion in this event, stormed to the top of qualifying with a 1:42.29. That\u2019s the third-fastest swim in the collegiate ranks so far this season, behind the 1:41.67 by Texas\u2019 Will Licon and the 1:41.93 by Michigan\u2019s Dylan Bosch. Look for Nolan to dip under 1:42 tonight, and challenge his lifetime best of 1:41.21 from that NCAA title swim.<\/p>\n<p>Also getting into the top eight for the Cardinal were: Tom Kremer (fourth: 1:43.63), Curtis Ogren (fifth: 1:44.56), Gray Umbach (sixth: 1:44.62) and Max Williamson (seventh: 1:44.82). In second and third spots were two California Golden Bears. Josh Prenot sits second with a 1:43.48, while Ryan Murphy is third with a 1:43.51.<\/p>\n<p>Morten Klarskov of Southern California kept the 200 IM final from being an All-Bay area affair with a 1:45.30 to qualify eighth.<\/p>\n<p><em>Number of A and B finalists by school for the 200 IM are listed below:<\/em><\/p>\n[table \u201c\u201d not found \/]<br \/>\n\n<p><strong>50 freestyle<\/strong><br \/>\nArizona\u2019s Brad Tandy, the reigning co-NCAA champion in the 50 free, will be looking to defend his Pac 12 title tonight, but he\u2019ll take lane five as the second seed behind Southern California\u2019s Santo Condorelli, who posted a 19.27 this morning. Tandy was second with a 19.37. Condorelli eclipsed his lifetime best by four tenths of a second to jump to a tie for ninth in the nation with NC State\u2019s Ryan Held. Tandy will be looking to improve on his season best of 19.04 from last December.<\/p>\n<p>California put three sprinters into the 50 free final. Seth Stubblefield was third with a 19.44, Tyler Messerschmidt qualified fifth with a 19.59 and Fabio Gimondi snuck in with an eighth-place time of 19.71. Utah\u2019s Nick Soedel is fourth with a 19.50, while USC\u2019s Dylan Carter (sixth: 19.66) and Stanford\u2019s Sam Perry (seventh: 19.69) also will swim in the championship
