WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, November 10. TO no one's surprise, No. 9 Georgia leads all four of its duals after day one of competition at the Purdue duals; however, the Boilermakers are right in the thick of things, trailing the Bulldogs by nine points and the Nittany Lions by five. <\/p>\n
Purdue trails Georgia 88-79 and Penn State 86-81. Georgia's lead over Penn State is a comfortable 102-65. Utah and Louisville both trail the aforementioned teams, however, the Utes lead the Cards in their dual, 108-58. <\/p>\n
The meet has more than met Purdue head coach Dan Ross' expectations thus far. <\/p>\n
"If you can't get excited at a meet like this, then you don't belong in DI swimming," said Ross. "This is fun. We knew these teams wouldn't travel this far to swim slow and Penn State is showing how fast they really are, and I expect Georgia to stay on fire tomorrow." <\/p>\n
Purdue's highlights were a three-place sweep of the 3-meter springboard standings and a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke. Once again, freshman Aaron Koger won the 100 breast title in 55.43 seconds with junior teammate Jin-Soo Kim placing second in 56.72. <\/p>\n
Koger has won all five of his 100 breast races this season. In addition to the schools he beat Friday, Koger also has beaten competitors from nationally ranked Northwestern, Notre Dame and Arizona State. <\/p>\n
Another freshman, J.P. Perez, led the Boilermakers off the 3-meter, scoring 332.40 points. Defending Big Ten Diver of the Week Steve LoBue was second with 330.70 points and Zach Schultz was third with 311.80 points. <\/p>\n
Georgia won six of nine events, including the opening three races: 200 free relay, 200 IM and 500 free. The Bulldogs also claimed gold in the 400 medley relay, 100 free and 200 fly. Gil Stovall led Georgia win individual wins in the 200 IM and 200 fly with times of 1:50.09 and 1:48.40; defending NCAA Champion in the mile, Sebastien Rouault, won the 500 free with an NCAA provisional cut of 4:22.43. <\/p>\n
Patrick Schirk came away with Penn State's lone win, placing first in the 200 back in 1:48.49. Purdue's Romain Maire was second in 1:49.33. <\/p>\n
