{"id":125272,"date":"2015-03-03T22:18:47","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T05:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=125272"},"modified":"2015-03-03T22:18:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-04T05:18:47","slug":"michael-phelps-reinstated-worlds-roster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-reinstated-worlds-roster\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Phelps Could Be Reinstated to Worlds Roster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLORADO SPRINGS &#8211; It is still somewhat of a long-shot, but USA Swimming&#8217;s Chuck Wielgus told <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/olympics\/swimming\/story\/_\/id\/12416700\/michael-phelps-reinstated-usa-swimming-2015-world-championships\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN&#8217;s Bonnie Ford<\/a> today that there have been preliminary conversations with Michael Phelps about him potentially rejoining the World Championship roster.<\/p>\n<p>The quotes used in the article about the 18-time Olympic medalist were pretty vague, but there is at least a glimmer of hope for the Greatest of All Time <a title=\"Michael Phelps Withdraws From World Team; USA Swimming Enforces Six-Month Ban\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-withdraws-from-world-team-usa-swimming-enforces-six-month-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\">to be allowed back on the Worlds roster after voluntarily withdrawing himself from it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s complicated, but there are ways in which it could happen,&#8221; Wielgus told ESPN. &#8220;There&#8217;s a pathway for things to be reconsidered &#8212; or considered.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While that isn&#8217;t a definitive response regarding the likelihood of Phelps coming back, Wielgus certainly revealed that USA Swimming has been looking into its bylaws as well as FINA&#8217;s bylaws in terms of a process by which Phelps could be put back on the squad. \u00a0FINA likely would not turn down such a box office draw, since it&#8217;s definitely shown a proclivity to make choices that are best for television.<\/p>\n<p>USA Swimming&#8217;s spokesperson Scott Leightman further put the brakes on the story with even more language designed to reduce anyone&#8217;s expectations regarding Phelps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this point, it&#8217;s premature to discuss any specifics about next steps,&#8221; Leightman said.<\/p>\n<p>In October, <a title=\"Report: Michael Phelps Spent Eight Hours In Casino Before DUI Arrest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-casino-dui-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phelps was suspended through April due to being charged with driving under the influence in Baltimore<\/a>. \u00a0At the time, Phelps also agreed to withdraw from the Worlds roster. Phelps has <a title=\"Michael Phelps Tweets Statement; Checks Himself Into Rehab\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-tweets-statement-checks-himself-into-rehab\/\" target=\"_blank\">since entered rehab<\/a>, kept his head down and trained, and <a title=\"Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson Get Engaged, Share News On Instagram\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-nicole-johnson-get-engaged-share-news-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\">became engaged<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps is slated to return to competition at the Arena Pro Swim Series set in Mesa, April 15-18, and members of Phelps&#8217; management team have refused to comment on Wielgus&#8217; comments.<\/p>\n<p>While Tim Phillips was added as a replacement for Phelps in the 100 fly, Phelps could find his way back on the squad via the 200 IM or 100 free. \u00a0Tyler Clary was added in the 200 IM, while Ryan Lochte claimed the 100 free spot vacated by Phelps. \u00a0Clary spoke with Ford stating that he would have no problem to give up his 200 IM step to put Phelps back on the roster.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s vital,&#8221; Clary said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t see myself as being a competitor at his level in the 200 IM, and I don&#8217;t have the same chance of getting a
