{"id":124881,"date":"2015-02-28T07:15:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-28T14:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=124881"},"modified":"2015-02-28T07:15:05","modified_gmt":"2015-02-28T14:15:05","slug":"pittsburgh-women-navy-men-lead-ecacs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pittsburgh-women-navy-men-lead-ecacs\/","title":{"rendered":"Pittsburgh Women, Navy Men Lead ECACs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PITTSBURGH \u2013 Following the first day of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Open Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Pittsburgh leads the women\u2019s competition with 214 points, while the U.S. Naval Academy paces the men\u2019s field with 224 total points.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers compiled the majority of their success on the springboard, placing one-two-three in the one-meter diving event. Freshman Meme Sharp (Noblesville, Ind.) led the way, taking the diving crown and earning 20 points with a mark of 297.10. Sophomore Rachel Saunders (Warrington, Pa.) and junior Sam Winkelmann (Richmond, Va.) followed with respective scores of 268.25 and 258.80.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh also notched victories and meet records in the 400-medley relay and 200-freestyle relay. In the 400, it was the team of junior Blair Wegescheide (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.), junior Maddie Marcelle (Pittsburgh, Pa.), senior Lauren Mills (Johnson City, Tenn.) and freshman Mary Beth Blocher (Munster, Ind.) grabbing the title and ECAC record with a time of 3:45.45. Blocher was also a part of the 200 squad that topped the field and set another record with a time of 1:33.20. Joining Blocher were junior Alex Iwanicki (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), freshman Tia VanLandeghem (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and freshman Emily Murphy (Lima, Ohio).<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, the Midshipmen were led by a top-three finish in the 500-yard freestyle and a standout performance from junior Thomas Duvall (Durham, N.H.). Duvall not only snagged first place in the 500 but also broke the meet record by almost five seconds. Following Duvall were junior Alex Nickell (Loveland, Colo.) and Riley Mita (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) with times of 4:21.64 and 4:24.69. Navy also took home top-three finishes in both the 200-freestyle relay and the 400-medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable performances included first and second place finishes in the three-meter dive from the Pittsburgh men\u2019s squad. Sophomore Anthony Galante (Cary, N.C.) earned gold with a score of 342.60, while teammate Dominic Giordano (Wexford, Pa.) followed with a mark of 332.95.<\/p>\n<p>The above article is a press release submitted to Swimming World.
