PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, November 4. THE Scarlet Knight swimmers and divers hosted the University of Connecticut at the Sonny Werblin Recreational Center on Saturday, Nov. 4. The women's team (3-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) prevailed over the Huskies, 166-123, and set the tone for a great BIG EAST season, while the RU men (1-2, 0-2 BIG EAST) fell short in a close meet, with a final score of 160-140.<\/p>\n
The women (3-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) had a successful meet, winning nearly every event. The team of sophomores Cat Whetstone (Haven Beach, N.J.), Linda Tate (Lantana, Fla.), Madison Kennedy (Avon, Conn.) and freshman Shayna Longacre (Barto, Pa.) compiled a winning time of 1:44.64 in the 200 medley relay, as RU swept the event. Freshman Kim Case (Springfield, Va.) posted a time of 10:11.63 to win the 1000 freestyle, while junior Ashley Dunphy (Palm Springs, Calif.) led another sweep in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:52.41. Whetstone secured three more victories in the 100 backstroke (57.80), the 200 backstroke (2:03.24), and the 100 butterfly (55.28). Longacre claimed top honors in both the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:04.02, as well as the 200 breaststroke (2:18.97). In the 200 butterfly, senior Sarah Bicknell (Bettendorf, Iowa) reached the wall just before Tate, as the women took first and second with respective times of 2:04.44 and 2:04.45. Kennedy collected a pair of first place finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.33) and the 100 freestyle (51.25), while senior Allyson Parent (Glens Falls, N.Y.) posted a winning time of 4:25.91 in the 400 IM. Rutgers' women ended the meet with one final first place finish, as Alex Allen (Boyertown, Pa.), Dunphy, Bicknell and Kennedy stopped the clock at 1:35.36 in the 200 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n
The men's first victory came from junior Alan Bakes (Brown Mills, N.J.), who swam to a 9:46.37 first place finish in the 1000 freestyle, while freshman Tyson Slesnick (Austin, Texas) finished second (9:53.99). Senior Bobby Daplyn (Vineland, N.J,) and sophomore Zach Shimota (Eden Prairie, Minn.) shined for RU as multiple event winners. Daplyn posted winning times of 1:42.44 in the freestyle and 4:44.38 in the 500 freestyle, while Shimota swept both backstroke events, posting times of 52.22 in the 100 and 1:54.35 in the 200. Sophomore Josh Griffey (Pleasant Prairie, Wis.) was another individual winner when he swam to victory in the 400 IM (4:00.58). Griffey helped to score crucial points for the Knights in other events, as well, when he finished second after Shimota in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.13, and also took second in the 200 butterfly (1:54.31). Another key competitor was sophomore Steve Miller (Windham, N.H.), who secured a pair of second place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:43.15) and the 100 freestyle (46.79).<\/p>\n
The Scarlet Knights' diving team performed extraordinarily well, with sophomores Andre Watson (Hempstead, N.Y.) and Artiom Jangols (Wanaque, N.J.) taking first and second place, respectively, on both the one and three-meter boards.
