CANBERRA, Australia, November 4. ONE of the final tuneups for next month's Australian World Championship Trials, the Speedo AIS International Meet kicked off Friday with a solid Aussie field and a handful of international standouts, highlighted by the presence of American Natalie Coughlin.<\/p>\n
Competing in a long-course head-to-head format, Coughlin raced in a pair of championship finals, taking top honors in the 50-meter butterfly with a performance of 26.85. That effort held off Felicity Galvez (27.42). Coughlin was back in action in the 50 freestyle, but had to settle for second in the one-lap sprint as her mark of 25.71 was bettered by Australian Sally Foster (25.55).<\/p>\n
Aussie Eamon Sullivan and Britain's Liam Tancock headlined the male efforts during the first session of finals, which featured the 50-meter stroke events. Sullivan, continually improving in the sprint freestyle, won the 50 free in 22.13, ahead of the 22.84 popped by Jon Newton. Meanwhile, Tancock won the 50 back going home with a 25.72 against Ashley Delaney's 26.14.<\/p>\n
World-record holder Jade Edmistone held off a hard-charging Tarnee White to win the women's 50 breast in 31.26 against White's 31.41 effort. Meanwhile, Adam Pine claimed the men's 50 fly in 24.51 over Kirk Palmer's 24.91, while Tay Zimmer earned the 50 back in 28.55 over Hinkelien Schreuder's 29.34.<\/p>\n
