CARY \u2013 Olympian Todd Torres raced against swimmers more than half his age this weekend at the North Carolina senior short course championships, and set a U.S. Masters Swimming national record in the process.<\/p>\n
Torres, 46, already owned the national record in the 100-yard breaststroke in the 45-49 age group with a 57.24 from December 2013, but he improved on that twice on Friday. In prelims, Torres qualified first with a 57.17, then posted a 56.83 in finals. He nearly won the event, placing second to 19-year-old Austin Rednour and his 56.05. Torres\u2019 best time as a Masters swimmer is 56.22 from the 2013 spring nationals, when he was 44 years old.<\/p>\n
Though short course meters and long course meters Masters world records can only be set in sanctioned Masters meets, U.S. Masters Swimming national records can be broken in any<\/i> sanctioned meet by a registered Masters swimmer. USMS short course yards national records are de facto world records, given that the United States is the only country to actively compete in that format.<\/p>\n
Torres competed in two Olympics representing Puerto Rico, placing 16th in the 100 breast in 1992 and 21st in 1996. He was also a silver medalist at the 1991 Pan American Games in the 100 breast and an All-American at Louisiana State University. His 53.67 from 1991 still ranks second-best all-time in the LSU record books, and he was the school’s first NCAA swimming champion, winning the 100 breast in 1987.<\/p>\n
